Navy Releases McCain’s Records

The Navy released John McCain’s military record after a Freedom of Information Act request from the Associated Press. The record is packed with information on McCain’s medals and commendations but little else. The one thing that the McCain campaign does not want to see released is the record of McCain’s antics on board the USS Forestal in 1967. McCain was personally responsible for the deadliest fire in the history of the US Navy.

You could even put this one in the conspiracy column. What the hell actually happened on the Forestal deck that day? Keep in mind that McCain's father was an Admiral and the Navy did a lousy job trying to determine the cause of the accident. Mostly they relied on McCain's testimony which was rather vague and uncertain. Did the missile come from his plane or was his plane hit by the missile or was he a bystander. Apparently no other incidents like that happened during the long history of the A-4 so indications are that there was some sort of negligence in the arming of the missile or it was accidentally set off by the pilot.

January 14, 1969 -the bie E blows up off Hawaii. On its way to the coast of Vietnam the carrier conducted flight operations. During the arming of an F-4 Phantom one of the aircraft's Zuni missiles detonated. The fire was spreading to other armed planes and some of their bombs and missiles detonated, too.
ENTERPRISE turned into the wind to keep the flames away from the isle.
One hour later the fire on the flight deck was under control but there were still fires inside the ship which were finally extinguished some hours later.
During the eight explosions and the following fires aboard USS ENTERPRISE, 27 crewmen were killed and approx. 120 others were injured (other sources: 24 dead men and 85 injured people).
The carrier was heavily damaged and in the flight deck there were three holes (one of them through two decks). 15 aircraft were destroyed or damaged. it was a Zuni missile that blew up the Forrestal
