Native Americans

Do any of you race specialist know or have befriended native Americans. I met quite a few when I drove my big rig out west. How did they react when you tried to befriend them?

I spent part of yesterday with a Seminole family. Race never came up, unless criticizing obama policy is racist.

I know alot of "Indians", most "Indians" I have met do not like the term "Native American" (That is just a term invented by the liberal media). If I was to call my heritage as "European American" people would think I am crazy.

Every "Indian" I have ever met is just like me and you. We are all human beings.

I asked him if he would speak to my son's kindergarten class and he obliged. This was back in '93.
My brother visited him in Oklahoma where he met his family and was invited to a lodge meeting. During the smudging ceremony the other tribe members protested my brother's presence but Sky put them in their place.
Didn't talk much but when he did it was straight and to the point. Never manicured any bullshit.

"Tried to befriend them?" Are you insinuating it's harder to make friends with an Indian than it would be someone else?

I have Cherokee blood in me, and I don't feel I'm any different than anybody else.

My friggin grandmother was born on the Schaghticoke reservation in Kent, CT. I thought she was cool. She hated bigoted truck drivers, though.

Well, I am surrounded by reservations. Every tribe member I've met and known are fine, friendly folk.

Well they generally react ok if you walk up to them slowly with both your arms outstretched to show you aint runnin' heels. Sometimes it can be hard to communicate since they only speak broken English, if that, but by offering a gift of furs or fire water they will see that you come in peace.

What constitutes a "race specialist?"

I have friends from damn near every race. We all talk about the differences, the stereotypes, race relations, and we all get along splendidly. I do not pass judgement on any person based on the color of their skin, but then again, I do not pass judgement on a person because of their politcal views or their religious beliefs. I don't give two shits about a person's sexuality or lack thereof. I'd say I am just as qualified as anyone to answer the question...

I grew up in Oklahoma and knew lots of Indians.

There is a reason it was against the law to sell Indians "Fire Water" in the old west.

They go insane when they get drunk.

Most of the Indians I grew up with became alcoholics just like their fathers, uncles, brothers.
