The commander refused to surrender. The troops did try to surrender. You have no point.
The continued killing turned into mass murder, and those soldiers today would be tried, convicted, and executed. Instead of firing squads, the would have been hung, not by the drop but the rise so they would strangle to death. Appropriate punishment for the sin.
