Man, what's going on in our Country? Why such a rush to ban everything? Don't we have enough restrictive & oppressive Laws already?

Ever been to a local business and dealt with an employee that smelled like they bathed in cigarette ash? Well lucky for you, cities across the country may start to ban the hiring of smokers.

The city of Fort Worth, Texas could soon become the first major American city to ban the hiring of smokers according to CBSDFW News. As part of Mayor Betsy Price’s goals, she aims to make Forth Worth a healthier city and has encouraged employees to find the best way to cut city costs.

Attendees of a recent Fort Worth city council meeting were briefed on a proposal that would ban the hiring of people who use tobacco.

City Manager Tom Higgins favors the proposal and believes it could help reduce city costs.

“Overall I think there was a strong belief that not only does it provide financial benefits for us and our health insurance, but to work with employees to get in a smoking cessation plan and just not to encourage it by hiring additional people,” he said.

The proposition faces a slippery legal slope.

“What is it going to be next? Is it going to be refusing to hire people who consume alcohol?” said one skeptic.

If the city decides to take action against smokers, it will be at least a month before a vote.

They could make the same argument about obese people too and I'm willing to bet that's down the road.

That said, I don't have a problem with a private business incorporating this policy, but the government should not be allowed to discriminate.

I thought Fort Worth was a city?

If a limited liability corporation were to decide not to hire smokers, you'd be jumping in to defend their rights, and I probably wouldn't give you any crap about it. Can a city government do the same? What do the taxpayers of Fort Worth think about the city trying to reduce costs?

Any employer should decide not to hire smokers. Smokers are pooreer workers, sloppier in their habits, and are costly to ensure.

Not Fort Worth Texas!!

And Betsy Price is a Republican too.

What's going on here?

The question is, will Rick Perry now threaten to secede Texas from Fort Worth????

Many Republicans support the Big Government Nanny/Police State. There are no real differences between Socialists/Progressives & Neocons. They're both Big Government Globalists.

Where does it end? We're not going to hire anyone who eats at a fast food place more that twice a month? If your body fat count is too high? IMHO, I can undersatnd banning smoking while at work but not on ones personal time.

Yeah, Corporations and Government are encroaching more & more into Citizens' private personal lives. It's a very disturbing trend. It should be of great concern to all Americans. It doesn't matter which Polical Party you cheerlead for.

Wow.

What an interesting concept.

The city is making the decision on an economic basis saying that non-smokers will cost them less in health insurance.

What about fat people. And what about people with pre-existing conditions.

And what about people with lots of driving accidents.

And what about people who live in parts of town where shootings are above average.

It is within the rights of Ft. Worth to do what they will. However, this could easily be discrimination given that it won't be applied equally (how are they going to know if you smoke ?....what if you live with someone who smokes ?).

The Nanny State rolls on.

Very important questions. And it's very sad that we're even contemplating such questions. Where does it all end? How much more will the People allow Corporations and Government to encroach into their private personal lives? When will they say enough is enough?

Time to start your own business. Then you can do as you please. Hopefully. Unless it endangers the salmon or the owls or the ants or something I guess. God! Luckily for me I ignore it and go blithely along and do as I please. Worked so far.

If you've never heard the term "Barbarians At The Gate", then you might want to think about it:

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Re: bolded part - I cracked up over that one. But I can understand the smoking bit. Not only do they stink to high heaven, but they DO get sick a lot. My dear friend of 25 years has smoked like a chimney for 50 years. In total denial it is detrimental to her health. Not a tumor on her vocal cord, not a heart attack, and now not even emphysema (COPD) is going to deter her from her smoking. she sounds terrible on the phone (we don't live in the same state), she feels like shit, went to doc and is on inhalers and prednisone, but as long as she keeps smoking her days are numbered.

And yet it's happening deep in the heart of Texas, the reddest of the reds.

It's a sign 'O the times. When government supplies health care government has the right to dictate behavior. Some dangerous behavior like promiscuous sexual activity might be tolerated for a while and certain segments of society prone to HIV infection might be protected for a while but sooner or later all bad habits will be erased in the brave new liberal world brought to you by big government.

Ft. Worth bans smoking, but cocaine addicts can get into the secret service.

It's not like this makes a lot of sense.

Big Government Police/Nanny Staters control both Political Parties at this point. I'm still surprised so many believe there are real differences between Socialists/Progressives & Neocons. They're both Big Government Globalists in the end.
