Name them and Shame them

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) - A city councilor in Massachusetts thinks he's come up with a way to stop people looking at pornography on public library computers — name them and shame them.

Quincy Councilor Daniel Raymondi has asked Mayor Thomas Koch to make public a list of people who have viewed pornography on library computers within the past year. The council unanimously approved a resolution on the idea last week.

Library director Ann McLaughlin tells The Patriot Ledger that using library computers to access porn is against policy, and violators are given two warnings before they are banned. She says she's not sure publicly naming violators would work.

Mass. official aims to shame library porn viewers

Good idea?

I think so.

Sure they do.

NO, you don't. Its a PUBLIC computer.

And I still don't understand why this library doesn't just install filters.

Its irrelevant if its a PUBLIC or private computer. The 4th amendment applies to people not places. Katz v. United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Though the case involves PUBLIC phones and wiretapping I think that and its “reasonable expectation of privacy” doctrine can apply to the use of public computers.

I agree, they should just use filters. I see nothing wrong with limiting the content that can be viewed.

Wrong. Almost all libraries have a disclaimer either when you sign up for the computer or on the computer itself that STATES th use of the computer is monitored and viewable by a THIRD party.

One has no expectation of privacy in such a case. Phones are different.

That is like claiming one has an expectation of privacy while having a conversation on a street corner.

The use of public property will normally have no expectation of absolute privacy. But criminalizing the use of a library computer is as ridiculous as criminalizing somebody checking out a racy novel from the library. There are all kinds of controls, at a very modest cost, that would restrict any objectionable sites.

And also, how many times have you been doing a simple search and clicked on what you thought was a legitimate site and found yourself in a porn site? Happened to me one time at work and I not only inadvertently got a porn site but one rigged with a slide show that you couldn't exit. The pictures just kept coming in rapid succession. Had to turn off the computer to get out of it. But if I was being monitored, it could easily be interpreted that I was intentionally viewing porn.

Put filters on the computers and scrap this Orwellian big brother is watching you stupidity.

I don't know of ANY public library where you don't have to sign a consent form waiving your expectation of privacy. I would assume that if public phones required the same waiver, you could get around the wiretapping issue as well.

To some conservatives, efficiency in government apparently means streamlining the government's authority to dictate behavior.

Good call douchers!

To SOME conservatives our right to not have our child exposed to perverts whacking off over porn trumps Yukon's right to ogle young boys on the internet.

THAT IS A GOOD CALL

To SOME conservatives our right to not have our child exposed to perverts whacking off over porn trumps Yukon's right to ogle young boys on the internet.

Crying to the government to help you raise your kids huh?

I guess that's not a uniquely liberal trait afterall.

So I have to go to the library with my child every time she goes and guard against some pervert exposing her to porn in order for you to feel better about something?

Nah, of course not. After all, we drop them off at school and it's the teachers responsibility to see they make good grades.......correct?

Sometimes, when I drop the kids off at the pool, I just leave the room.

Let someone else deal with it.

OMG but what will I do, what will I see, worries me .... oh, Massachusetts, whew, thank goodness....my dreams are safe.... ;)

"Last night unto my bed bethought there came
Our lady of strange dreams, and from an urn
She poured live fire, so that mine eyes did burn
At the sight of it. Anon the floating fame
Took many shapes, and one cried: "I am shame
That walks with Love, I am most wise to turn
Cold lips and limbs to fire; therefore discern
And see my loveliness, and praise my name."

And afterwords, in radiant garments dressed
With sound of flutes and laughing of glad lips,
A pomp of all the passions passed along
All the night through; till the white phantom ships
Of dawn sailed in. Whereat I said this song,
"Of all sweet passions Shame is the loveliest."

'In Praise of Shame' by Lord Alfred Douglas

Evetually the libraries definition of obscene as it relates to porn would be expanded to profane since the line between both can blurry and exploited for just about any reason. Sets a pretty bad precedent not to mention a incredibly good opportunity for abuse.
