Myth:*national debt is a burden that will ruin our children’s futures

America paid off its debt just once, and that by a Democratic president. So how did the payoff effect America, what happened to our economy, our way of life; did Americans rejoice in the streets buy new stuff? Well one result of the debt elimination was an economic depression.

America has never paid off its debt.
False. America pays off it's debts, it just takes on more debt after doing so. Aggregate debt may remain the same or increase, but debts are actually paid off.

Democrats even did away with the whole concept of a "Budget"
Democrats and Republicans both. It is dishonest to suggest one party is to blame for the debt.

Wrong. Harry Reid is the one who refused to bring up any budget proposal for a vote or even for debate.
Pointing out a Democrat that has made out debt problem worse is not evidence Republicans are any better when they are in control. The national debt has been increasing every year, regardless of the party in power.

dear, you are confused. In a democracy you have to compromise with the party opposite; this is especially true when the American people in their wisdom cant decide if they are liberals or conservatives. But, Republicans sign the pledge, Democrats don't!! Republicans have tried 30 times to make debt illegal in America and Democrats have killed every attempt.

Simple enough?

Your partisan view of things is amusing, but also somewhat depressing. Republicans love big spending just as much of the democrats. You are too easily gulled into believing Republican rhetoric.

Reagan
always sounded like he paid off the debt but of course he tripled it.

I wonder if republican worry warts can come up with one child in America who has received a bill from the government showing his share of the debt that he has to repay?

With all those thirty times to make the debt illegal, the only time the debt has been paid off is under a Democratic president. Are the Republicans in the House still passing "Repeal Obama-care bills" or is that effort now joined the Republican balanced budget bills?

The debt was not paid off. The debt simply did not increase. There is a difference between not running a deficit and paying off the debt. A huge difference. But I agree with the idea that obviously Republicans increase the debt too, not just Democrats.

Except for about 1 year, from 1835 to the beginning of 1836 (Andrew Jackson's second administration), the USA has always held public debt since the days of the Revolutionary War.

That is fact.

The United States actually paid off its debt entirely in January 1835, only to begin accruing debt anew by 1836 (the debt on January 1, 1836 was $37,000)

Also, this chart kind of tells it all over the last 70 years or so:

This is factually correct: the national debt tripled under Reagan.

A small price to pay for ending the cold war, freeing 2 billion people, saving the world from nuclear anniliation, and starting the longest period of continuous economic growth in American History.

Besides, Republicans have tried 30 times to make debt illegal in America and Democrats have killed every effort.

more importantly under the first Republican House in 40 years thanks to Newt. Now you have your ABC's. Do you ever get everything right?

dear Republicans sign the pledge, not Democrats. Republicans have tried 30 times to make debt illegal.

Simple enough for even a liberal?

The pledge means nothing. Not a single Republican will ever have to be held accountable to a meaningless pledge. You fall far too easily for political ploys. Looking at actual facts when Republicans are in power, they still raise the debt, even if they have control of both houses of Congress and the executive.

It is sad to see how so many people, unable to articulate thoughts of their own, simply resort to posting links to ideological websites. According to the "rationale" of these sites, we should simply guarantee everyone an annual income of $100k, regardless of how much money we would have to borrow to do that. On second thought, why not make it $1 million?
Just quoting the best post in this thread

dear, control would mean huge majorities in Congress plus presidency, plus press, plus electorate, plus SCOTUS. In America power is divided. Did you ever go to school?

absurd since Republicans have tried 30 times to make debt illegal in America and Democrats have killed every effort!
You keep parroting that point ad nauseum, but it is meaningless. When Republicans are in full control, they too increase spending and the debt. Just look at the data--it is quite obvious. Another example of partisanship blinding someone to independent thought.
