Log your cell phone calls for a month than go and check your monthly bill. If those calls do NOT show up on your bill, your phone has been "intercepted"
Your cell will keep history of calls but log them.

Mysterious Fake Mobile Phone Towers Discovered

Fake masts are discovered by people using a heavily customised Android device - but it's unclear who owns them.
A report by Popular Science says the towers have been discovered across the country, and have the ability to attack mobile phones through eavesdropping and installing spyware.

They were discovered by people using a heavily customised Android device called the CryptoPhone 500.

It uses a secure version of the software which can tell if the phone is being subjected to what is known as a baseband attack.

It is then possible to trace the location of the offending tower.

The fake cell towers were detected in July, but the report states there could be more.

Les Goldsmith, chief executive of security firm ESD America, told the magazine: "Interceptor use in the US is much higher than people had anticipated.

"One of our customers took a road trip from Florida to North Carolina and he found eight different interceptors on that trip. We even found one at a casino in Las Vegas."

He said several of the masts were situated near US military bases.

"What we find suspicious is that a lot of these interceptors are right on top of US military bases," he said.

"So we begin to wonder - are some of them US government interceptors? Or are some of them Chinese interceptors?

"Whose interceptor is it? Who are they, that's listening to calls around military bases? Is it just the US military, or are they foreign governments doing it? The point is: we don't really know whose they are."

This is like three-or four-day-old news now, homie.

And they've already figured out that Miley Cyrus is behind it.

Yea I was aware of the date but first heard about it myself last night. Did not see anything in search results for previous posts.

Miley... does the "tongue" thing. YUCK!

If the calls are going through the towers aren't fake.

Sure they can be fake. The Calls can be TAPPED at that point and the signals simply repeated nanoseconds later to the nearest Legit tower.

It's all line of sight. So if you want to listen in -- you just need a tower and a bunch of antenna/receivers.

No telling what they are from these articles. Could be legitimate repeaters placed there for coverage and relay reasons. If NOT -- someone needs to provide answers --- like YESTERDAY..

I don't think that NewsWeek would leap to these conclusions if
they didn't have enough evidence. According to them --- this is a MUCH LARGER story that is NOT making the news. Worse than a conspiracy -- this is possibly the Big Brother that we always expected.. Real as life..

The Internet is abuzz with reports of mysterious devices sprinkled across America—many of them on military bases—that connect to your phone by mimicking cell phone towers and sucking up your data. There is little public information about these devices, but they are the new favorite toy of government agencies of all stripes; everyone from the National Security Agency to local police forces are using them.

While driving around the country, CryptoPhone users plotted on a map every time they connected to a nameless tower (standard towers run by wireless service providers like Verizon usually have names) and received an alert that the device had turned off their phone’s encryption (allowing their messages to be read).

While the abilities of these interceptors vary, the full-featured versions available to government agencies are capable of a panoply of interceptions. For example, the VME Dominator can capture calls and texts, and can even control the intercepted phone. (In an interview with NBC, Snowden revealed that with this kind of technology the NSA is capable of turning on a powered-down phone and essentially using it as a bug.)

This NSA-style surveillance is spreading to local cops. A growing number of police departments are using tower-mimicking devices, “stingrays,” to track a cell phone’s location and extract call logs. Though little is known about the use of these devices, watchdog groups have scored small victories in their attempts to punch through this veil of secrecy. The map below, courtesy of the ACLU, shows how the use of stingrays is spreading. The map also shows that despite the ALCU's greatest efforts, it is unable to uncover information about stingray use in most of the country.

Just go back to snooze. Turn on CNN and enjoy that video of NFL stars clocking their fiances in elevators -- and pay no attention to the state of freedom in this nation.. Two new seasons of Survivor and thousands of new Central American orphans up for adoption --- CHEAP.. Life is good..

No id the call goes through they are not fake. If they are not billing me for the time used they can listen all they want. I get to make more calls.

It has nothing to do with billing..you're getting billed.
You really don't understand the situation evidently.

Like I said Politico -- just go back to snooze.. Getchya some Late Night chat show time. Forget that these towers are appearing as part of a Nationwide Surveillance system to Tap Telephones. This way, NSA doesn't have to produce a Warrant or go lean on Verizon for data, they simply TAKE IT --- when and how they want it. Forget that the service provider that sells encrypted phones has OBSERVED this network ACTIVATING microphones and cameras without the owner's knowledge. Forget that they observed this network DISABLING encryption on private phone calls.

Ain't no big deal baby.. You've got NUTTIN to worry about..

Kinda makes the purpose of that 4 sq mile state of the art Brand New NSA facility they recently built in Utah.. Exactly the kind of center they would need to work those cell phone taps. And 90% of CongressCritters don't see the Black Budget that this network was authorized under or paid for and have NO FUCKING IDEA of how it happened. OR -- presumably -- they may not even realize that it HAS happened.

And to date --- no mainstream journalism outcry.. America needs some new political choices. The 2 we have are gonna destroy this country.. I've got some insight into communications intelligence and I used to ADMIRE the NSA for being a pocket of competence in an otherwise incapable Fed govt. But that was when NSA -- like the CIA -- was PROHIBITED from using these toys to spy domestically. Trust me when I tell you -- you do NOT want these technology tools turned on you..

I understand perfectly. And the OP clearly said the calls aren't ahowing up. That's a win win.

Did ya read the NewsWeek article I posted showing that the network of these stealth towers are owned by NSA and law enforcement? Of course you did. You're oblivious to the Constitutional dangers and focused SOLELY on the pennies that you are not really saving..

Unbelievable...

Unbelievable...
That's exactly what I say when an informative, neutral post that includes valid links to verified news sources gets shunted to the badlands by asshole moderators who don't like to see the truth...

Unbelievable is right.

Even if the story is true, I'm not saving anything because I don't use cellphones. If I did my grocery list is not that riveting. I guess the question is, what is it YOU don't want them to hear?

And this, folks, is the attitude that opens the door to tyranny.

It is all the brown shirts... first it was the moon landings in a basement in Arkansas, now it is the hijacking of you your phone conversations by mystery towers....

Stay out of Wyoming... for the Devils Tower lies there...
