My Kitten

After a little research, it turns out that what was in my kitten was maggot eggs... not actual hatched maggots. The kitten died several hours ago. *Sigh* I wasn't going to say anything, but I figured I should mention it for anyone else that cared.

I've never heard of maggots forming from the inside out.
And i dont see how it's possible because maggots are nothing more than fly eggs, which of course cant be laid on healthy tissue that hasnt been compromised.
Something else happened here.
I thought so, but I don't know what. I'm so confused...

I still lean towards rats or a mother that doesnt want kittens.
Something caused the wounds in order for the flies to lay eggs.

Nothing to be confused about...something broke the skin and flies laid eggs.
But I don't know how a rat could have got in, I had it in a box, in a closet. By all rights, it should have been safe. I've never seen a rat in the basement...

A baby cat, person, whatever, is very very fragile. Doesn't necessarily take a rat. It doesn't take much at all. That's why they're nurtured and fiercely protected by the mother.

One of the kittens that died on me had a bone sticking out. Life is very very fragile at the outset and vulnerable. It doesn't take long to strengthen but the first moments are critical.

You might be surprised where you find rats.
I live in a 5000 square foot custom home and I never thought we had rats....until I was up in the attic and found trails through the insulation.
They're sneaky bastards.

They are indeed, but they're really not quiet.

Could also have been a snake...

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your kittens.

I have helped raise 30 kittens from 2 feral momma cats.

Their eyes open at 2 weeks. Sometimes one will open before the other.

For the first week their eyes are completely closed.

One of these kittens was deformed and the momma cat ate it.

The other 29 kittens were fine and grew to adoption age which is 5 weeks.

I have never heard of a momma cat eating her entire litter.

There is a type of fly that lays eggs in living tissue. These types of flies are rare and mostly tropical though.

If your parents don't want to spend money on care of these ferals then there is nothing you can do.

Children are legal slaves of their parents until legal age of 18 in the USA unless there is some kind of abuse.

So it is up to your parents to manage their household.

In most cities and states feral cats have some rights. The animal abuse laws kick in then if a human abuses them. Normally a feral cat has the right to be not molested and should be left alone to wean her kittens.

Momma cats are usually pretty good about finding food. They are good at catching insects, spiders, birds, mice, rats, and squirrels.

A rat does not stand a chance against an adult cat. This would be like a tiger killing a dog.

But while the momma is away hunting the kitten is vulnerable.

If your feral kitten has a wound then you need to scrape it out and wash it with water and then alcohol.

You can't put ointment on it because the animal will lick it off.

Kittens will eat soft solid food at 5 weeks.

Good luck.

Now you know, when ANYTHING out of the ordinary occurs, IMMEDIATELY take the kitten/cat to the vet!
That's a pretty expensive solution. I did that once for a litter of 5 kittens that all had runny noses and puss-eyes and it cost $50 per kitten.

Well, you can always just sit around the box and watch them die, one at a time... I heard that liberals think that is fun, and would rather spend the money on POT, or METH! What price do YOU put on a little living life?

What price do you put on scoring stupid "points" on an internet message board?

Grow up. There's an idea.

Pumpkins mom and dad are far right fringe "conservatives" and they fill her full of far right propaganda and brainwashing.

So you could not call them "liberals" by any stretch of the imagination.

If they don't care about feral kittens it is NOT because they are liberals.

Perhaps someone should have advised her to contact a LOCAL ASPCA or NO KILL shelter for advice as to where to take a sick kitten. By her posts, Pumpkin is a hell of a lot smarter than most LIBERAL college kids, filled with Socialism!

You don't seem to have done much with ferals apparently.

The facilities cannot afford to take in sick animals because they cannot afford the contagion risk.

If a kitten is not healthy they will not take it.

My parents don't fill my head with anything, and they don't have time for politics. The conclusions I've come to, I've done so through my own research. Thank you for your posts, though. I appreciate the information on pets.

35 years of cat and kitten rescue, have 37 now inside, some one eyed, fixed broken legs and backs from car hits, abandoned and discarded old timers, and everything in between....and a few dozen more outside, perhaps you should go to the PETS section in here when for over 2 years I've been placing stories of KITTEN RESCUES from 8 hours old on up, and THEY LIVED!.... MOST facilities, except in some large cities, have a network of people that foster these darling little fur balls, and can give anyone that wants it advice, or even take them to heal. Apparently, if you care as much as I do, you'll start your own rescue!

I gave it some thought, and the fact that they only lay eggs in unhealthy tissue and that they were indeed there, that the kitten was in a closet, where it was safe, and that when I noticed it, the wound wasn't bleeding... it must have already been there when I brought the kitten inside, and I somehow didn't notice. The kittens must have been hurt before the mother brought them onto the porch and abandoned them, or may have been born with open wounds?

Pumpkin, you need any advice on little furballs, PM me direct and I'll try to help you! YOU are what the conservative movement needs, a young person with intelligence, and curiosity that already knows RIGHT from wrong!

I do a lot of cat and kitten rescue. Correct.

Aww. Sorry to hear that. :( Make sure you get your cat fixed if you don't want it to keep having babies.
