We need some help here..

My daughter .. 10 years old has fine, curly, tends to get frizzy and matted hair.. She likes it shoulder length. Mom spends a good 2 hours a night getting the tangles out. We're not so sure about getting it straightened, too damaging.

So.. any ideas..?

Does your wife use detangler sprays when combing it? Some of the Salons sell some really good ones. I used them on my girls when they were little and they worked great.

Please dont put her on the roller coaster of messages "shes not pretty or good enough" that whole "beauty" thing.

Yes straightening it will damage it. If its about managing her hair so you dont have to brush out try breading it or a pony tail.

They do use detangler and braid her hair to help out untill morning but she's very active, loves the outdoors and by evening same game..

Eh, I have good reason but I don't brag about their looks, personality yes. They are all self confident, the 10 year old.. too much so..Dad's future headaches..Haven't tried beading.

I was kind of hoping for a lead on conditioner or some no damage treatment..

Do you condition her hair?

Instead of 2 hours brushing her hair to try and get the tangles out try using conditioner in her hair and work it to loosing the tangles and then putting her in the shower.

Yes.. we've tried all sorts of conditioners.

My wife uses a leave in conditioner now but in the past used to brush and comb her hair in the tub..Nowadays, nobodies allowed in the bathroom when she's in there... changes you know..

Both my girls have curly hair, the youngest (13) much more so.

Used a good conditioner and a fat toothed comb. After her hair is washed and conditioned, have her comb it out in the shower (with help from your wife if needed, er . . . if allowed! My oldest started doing this on her own and it works great).

She uses Tresemme (if you google Tresome or Tressome you'll get tons of porn sites!) Smooth & Silky Anti-Frizz Secret Creme and Fresh Start No Frizz Creme

Anti-Frizz Smoothing Crème | TRESemmé | Products | TRESemmé

No Frizz Crème | TRESemmé | Products | TRESemmé

If she uses a hair dryer (usually she doesn't) she uses a diffuser.

Once dry, don't brush or comb it because it just gets frizzy.

A good cut helps. Her hair is about shoulder length or a bit longer but is has long layers in it. Sometimes she uses a hair straightener but hasn't mastered it yet.

ETA: I just saw your post about not wanting anyone in the bathroom. Yup, changes. Around ages 10-11 I would quickly wash their hair then leave and let them do the rest just till they got good (enough) at it. It's a process . . . .

sounds like of a conundrum than a dilemma

I know nothing about this topic.

But thanks for axing.

My daughter has really fine, thick hair, too.
It's finally sort of coming out of it, but I used soft-bristle brushes, brushed it a LOT, used conditioner and kept it well trimmed so the ends didn't knot up.

I also kept it in braids.

I had to be careful to use only cloth-covered elastics on her hair or it would break.

The soft bristled brushes really do work. You don't so much brush the hair as just keep smoothing it and it gets more and more subdued with each stroke. At first you're just combing the hair on the top, but it gets a little more with each stroke. It also stimulates oil production which helps calm fly-aways and tangles.

100 strokes a night makes a huge difference. That and braiding.

Thankfully, my daughter's hair is a little less fine than it was even a year ago.

And I use vinegar on her hair frequently. It gets rid of all the product build up, makes it extremely shiny.

When she puts the conditioner in when she's in the shower, have her get washed while it's doing it's thing, then comb her hair with the fat toothed comb while the conditioner is still in, then finger comb her hair as she rinses it. Tangles should be gone. She's at the age where the little kid detangler stuff just doesn't cut it anymore.

Mrs Lumpy read it over and thanks all of you for the good advice. A lot she's tried but new stuff also..
