So as some of y'all know, I play poker at Foxwoods in Connecticut just about every weekend.

Last night I took a beat.

I arrived at the casino at like 11 and sat down at a pretty wild 1/2 NL table with 300 USD. There was a guy there with over a grand in front of him, playing very aggressively with marginal hands and getting lucky. I played conservatively most of the night looking to catch a hand and play a big pot against the donk.

Finally at 4 AM it happened. I picked up pocket kings in late position after he popped the pot to $20 ... I reraised $60 and he repops to $150 ... I now have a tough decision to make ... call, fold, or raise ... if it were any other player at the table I would have either folded or just smooth called but because of how loose this guy played I moved in on him for the rest of my money. He called after a couple minutes contemplating it. I had around $350 invested into the pot when all the money went in and was sure I had the best hand ... he flipped over AK off suit. WTF??!!

Flop came out 10 10 6 ... the turn was a duece ... and I bet you already know the river card ... a mother fucking ace.

It was a long, angry ride home for me.

No matter how good you are at poker it still comes down to the luck of the draw.

If you don't have a big enough bank roll counting cards almost doesn't really earn you that much. You have to be able to afford to take the inevitable losses too.

Even the MIT kids that were able to keep exact counts with 5 decks were still losing hands. Counting cards only increases the likelihood of winning the hand, it's not 100%. In fact, it's really not even all that CLOSE to 100%. If you're using the hi-low method you can still come up being off by a few cards, which can certainly make or break whether you actually win the hand. It gets you within a certain RANGE of cards, and it's still up to luck whether you're close enough in the range to beat the dealer's hand.

That's why you need the big bank roll, because you have to be able to afford to lose the ones you end up losing. If you can bank roll it, you can EASILY make big money because you can survive through the losses to get the big payoffs on the hands you win.
