President Rivlin of Israel has told European Jews to shun overtures from the far right after the Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ), the Austrian Freedom Party began a charm offensive aiming to eradicate its Nazi past. "Mr Eivlin wrote to the Jewish community in Vienna to warn that he would not tolerate any alliances of Israeli representatives with far-right politicians. He spoke out after two Israeli politicians to part in an FPÖ antisemitism seminar as part of a strategy designed to improve its image rather than to benefit the small number of Jewish voters." (THE TIMES 16 Jan. page 26)

President Rivlin is right, of course. The FPÖ was founded in 1956 by ex-Nazis who chose, as their first leader, former SS-Brigadeführer (Major General) Anton Reinthaller. Being extremely right-wing nationalists, they are hoping to be the biggest party in Austria after the elections next year and their position as opposed to allowing refugees from Syria is gaining them popularity. Having Israeli politician Rafael Eitan, 90, (Eichmann's kidnapper) was something of a coup for the FPÖ but President Rivlin was up to their tricks.
