A pretty ballad I'd always thought, it has since taken on added significance after reading a poignant piece two years ago about an airman whose identified remains were returned to his daughter (his beloved wife having died not knowing his whereabouts) after 44 years. In the article, which I found so moving, the daughter relates that this ballad was sung at her parents' wedding ceremony by a mutual friend of theirs. on this eve, in honor and remembrance of this airman and his family -- and by extension, all those soldiers who never came back and their families -- I present the following:
