POTSDAM, Germany (Reuters) - Germany's attempt to create a multicultural society has "utterly failed," Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday, adding fuel to a debate over immigration and Islam polarising her conservative camp.

Speaking to a meeting of young members of her Christian Democrats (CDU), Merkel said allowing people of different cultural backgrounds to live side by side without integrating had not worked in a country that is home to some four million Muslims.

"This (multicultural) approach has failed, utterly failed," Merkel told the meeting in Potsdam, south of Berlin.

Merkel faces pressure from within her CDU to take a tougher line on immigrants who don't show a willingness to adapt to German society and her comments appeared intended to pacify her critics.

She said too little had been required of immigrants in the past and repeated her usual line that they should learn German in order to get by in school and have opportunities on the labour market.

The debate over foreigners in Germany has shifted since former central banker Thilo Sarrazin published a book accusing Muslim immigrants of lowering the intelligence of German society.

Sarrazin was censured for his views and dismissed from the Bundesbank, but his book proved highly popular and polls showed a majority of Germans agreed with the thrust of his arguments.

Merkel has tried to accommodate both sides of the debate, talking tough on integration but also telling Germans that they must accept that mosques have become part of their landscape.

She said on Saturday that the education of unemployed Germans should take priority over recruiting workers from abroad, while noting Germany could not get by without skilled foreign workers.

She means the instruments the State has used for integration of the integration-unwillingly.
There will come "German-language"-courses for immigrants which are long-time unemployed and receive social benefits.

In same speech she again voiced support for German President Wulff's remarks that Islam is a part of Germany.

Maybe the Germans should start by learning to get along with the French, Poles & Russians before trying to deal with the Muslims.

I have heard rumor that there are areas as large as 20 square blocks in some cities where the people actually do practice sharia law. (Once my son, who was just married this week in Germany, settles down I'll try to get first hand accounts)

And look at the USA. We have so many different cultural groups who willingly live in certain neighborhoods, and wouldn't dream of moving ....

The majority of Muslims in Germany are Turks.
German President Wulff, who has declared Integration his primary area of work, will travel in his first abroad-visit for a 5-day Turkey visit on Monday.

There is a certain %-number of Turks which neither are at home in Germany nor in Turkey. Lost in Translation. They do not speak both language very well.
Points like dual-language (German-Turkish) kindergarten will come up on the visit of President Wulff, as well as dual-language lyceums in Germany.
Turkish President already has appeled on the integration-unwillingly to integrate fully into society.

There is no such thing as Sharia. The mosques the Turks in Germany attend are all State mosques of Turkey. The Imams are public servants, and the Texts of the sermons come from Directorate for Religious Affairs.

From next year on 4 German Universities will for first time educate German-born Imams on the faculities which are currently built.
For now all Imams are imported from abroad. In case of Turkish mosques, they are Imams with status of public servants from Turkey, mostly coming from the Faculty forDivinity of Ankara University.
