Sure, why not? the two aren't mutually exclusive.

However by offering a "pre-port of entry" facility in Southern Mexico, those individuals that might be eligible for asylum (i.e. not "criminals") will be enticed to show up at the facility ("CARROT") while those that bypass the opportunity can be targeted for arrest, detention and deportation ("STICK"). You not only provide an incentive based "sorting" mechanism, you also begin the process of dissipating the "caravan", after all one of the biggest challenges here is that there is large number of immigrants sticking together, once you start dissipating the group it's far easier to arrest and detain/deport them.

You cannot do that. There are millions who apply to come into the US legally. Even the saddest cases must be turned away.

You're not understanding what I'm suggesting. The camp/facility in Southern Mexico would just allow asylum seekers to APPLY for asylum (and incidentally be vetted) and wait for an answer without having to make the 1,000+ mile trek to a port of entry, I'm not suggesting they get any special treatment on their applications.

Legitimate asylum seekers are likely to take that offer, rather than trekking across narco bandit filled Mexico without shelter, food, water, medical care only to arrive at a port of entry to file their applications. People that don't take the offer are indicating that they are NOT legitimate asylum seekers and thus are fair game for U.S. supported Mexican authorities to immediately arrest and deport with extreme prejudice.

What we cannot legally do is arbitrarily disqualify an applicant for asylum just because he/she was in this "caravan". So wouldn't you rather see them processed on Mexican soil as opposed to waiting until they get to the U.S. Border?

I agree with this but we also must hold Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico as responsible parties that must not allow such caravans.

Not to mention the fact that Mexico is doing what it can to disband and disrupt it and arrest members of it when Mexican Authorities catch them in small groups.

Any benefit in closing our southern border is far out weighed by the harm it would do. About a million people legally cross our southern border every day plus tens of thousands of trucks carrying goods to market. The jobs of millions of Americans depend on keeping our borders open.

This is not the first caravan of migrants headed toward the US border. In fact, it happens nearly every year and has for nearly 20 years. Some never make it to the border and those that do usually result in a few people getting asylum, some being arrested and the rest are turned back. Although it has become a major media event, it represents little danger to the US.

Mexico would probably not close their southern border regardless of what the US did with it's border because by law it has an open border policy and trade agreements with central American countries. Over the 800 hundred mile border with Guatemala, there are hundreds of crossings, most are unmanned.

And those thousanes of people that need to cross can put enough pressure on mexico to stop letting these illegals use their country as free passage.

More likely the pressure would be on Washington. A Million people cross the border everyday and thousands of US trucks taking goods to market. This is not a zero sum game. Both sides would loose. So a president that takes such an action must be sure what he will get out of it is worth the damage it will do. These migrant caravans are of little or no danger to the US. A few people are admitted to the US and the rest return home. Mexico can not legally stop them. Most of the Hondurans cross legally into Mexico and many of the members of the caravan are Mexicans.
