Mosha and Motala are two elephants who each lost a leg to land mines. Land mines are still being used in 3 or 4 countries.

If you're not familiar with the story of this wonderful vet hospital in Thailand, its well worth looking through these sites.

Mosha when she arrived at the hospital after losing her leg to a land mine. Its hard to imagine this poor baby's agony.

Mosha Injured by Landmine
June 9, 2006 in Mynmar
we received a phone call from the owner of Mobra (the elephant who stepped on a landmine and was treated at FAE’s Elephant Hospital years before) that a baby elephant had stepped on a landmine in Mynmar just across the border of Tak Province. We asked him to quickly transport the baby and the Mother elephant as well even though she was not injured. I was so worried that I sent our vet and staff over and they met on the way to accompany the baby and her mother to our hospital.

Her temporary prothesis. Notice that the elephants are not chained in any of the photos.
