New Obama plans: 'spend our way out' of downturn - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama outlined new multibillion-dollar stimulus and jobs proposals Tuesday, saying the nation must continue to "spend our way out of this recession" until more Americans are back at work.

Since the program (TARP) is costing taxpayers at least $200 billion less than expected, Obama said, "This gives us a chance to pay down the deficit faster than we thought possible and to shift funds that would have gone to help the banks on Wall Street to help create jobs on Main Street."

But Republicans continued to insist that the leftover and repaid TARP money must be used exclusively for deficit reduction and not for a new jobs program.

"The president's announcement is further proof that TARP has morphed from an emergency injection of liquidity to thaw frozen credit markets into a $700 billion revolving slush fund to promote the Democrats' political, social and economic agenda," said Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas.

This is NOT a good idea. We have NO real data that tells us the original stimulus is working. This makes no sense to me.

I see Obama's approval numbers dropping down in the 30's of he sticks with this inane line of reasoning.

Keep it up!! We need a Republican House and Senate to counter balance the loony left. Then when the Republican's take back the White House we can vote in a Democratic House and Senate to counter the loony right.

Building and repairing infrastructure is a investment in our own future.

Unlike wars built on lies for corporate profit after you spend this money you have something to show for it for decades to come.

The basis of my signature line is proof that we do have real data to show that the administration doesn't have the ability to accurately keep track of what they spend. How do they know it is doing any good. We are supposed to believe our leader without question I guess.
I agree, this is not a good idea.

I would be in complete agreement with you, EXCEPT it appears Obama wants to fix our infrastructure AND spend money on healthcare reform AND maintain forces in Iraq AND increase our forces in Afghanistan. He campaigned on stopping the Iraq occupation and cost savings from that would help offset the costs of healthcare reform.

About that future. Nice job deciding what had to be done and then handing the bill to our future taxpayers. Please link me to how either war is for corporate profit. Obama says something quite different. You mean he is WRONG?

P.S. You get $50b. for infrastructure. How did the "shovel ready" programs work for you?

Gotta agree Yank.

This makes no sense. Any job created by the Govt repairing anything is only a temp job. Once the job is done. Back to the unemployment line unless the rest of the economy picks up big time.

Everything I've read also says they have no way to figure if the Stimulus has helped or hurt the economy. Clowns in DC will throw good money after bad. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

I am certain that Mrs. Big Black Dog does her part to stimulate the economy. She spends so much money at Wal-Mart that it allows them to hire two more full time stockers!

Is this guy serious? Obama is such an idiot. And when you consider that Reid and Pelosi are part of the package, you know America is totally screwed.

I agree with xcited1. Obama, Reid and Pelosi are the PROBLEM. Also all of the idiots that support their political views.

Wasn't Porkulus supposed to "build and repair infrastructure"? And how much of the 787 Billion did they allocate to it? ...4%? :eusa_whistle:

Oh... and where's all that "profit" from the wars? You'd think if we were out pillaging for cash, we might have found some. Maybe you should turn out Jeffrey Immelt's pockets. Seems I remember GE doing a brisk business with Iran while our boys were coming home in flag-draped caskets and missing limbs.
You can find him on Obama's Economic Recovery Board.

There is talk of using some of the money to help state and local governments. Although not detailed, it looks like money to "save" police and fire jobs. Where is the help for the 7 million UNEMPLOYED Mr. President?

If we spent the money on more guns for Americans, do you think the right wing conservatives would support it?

No, they want to stop the runaway spending rightwinger. Post a little note on the corner of your monitor, then we won't have to remind you.

You seem to be confusing the bailout with the stimulus, Do you recall they wanted MORE for stimulus and had it trimed down by the Rs?

We are not a war with Iran are we?

While our people (men and women) came home in boxes Haliburton and Killall burn and loot put some of them in those boxes by eletrocuting them to make a higher profit on all those no bid contracts.

Where was all your big corporate outrage then?

Nowhere in the annals of human history have two wrongs added up to a right. It would be cool if, instead of throwing past mistakes at each other, we focused on the actual problems confronting us. Just sayin'.

I am working on a spending problem here. A spending problem that will cause an inflation problem. That will cause even more problems.

You realize, don't you, that you MoveOn.org idiots are a fat lot of hypocrites?

You maunder on about "Haliburton" while you ignore GE and Jeffrey Immelt's presence in the Obama administration. And why?... because MSNBC (a GE-owned company) told you to.

You don't see that the Us vs. Them dog-and-pony show has been been deliberatly devised to keep you from understanding THE TRUTH. And "The Truth" is... that you are one of us, the U.S. citizens. And they are Power-Brokers, earning their living on YOUR back, and usurping YOUR sovereign power.

It's not Republican vs. Democrat or Conservative vs. Liberal.
It's Individualism (Liberty) vs. Collectivism.
And ALL collectivist government policy is essentially FORCE. Power over the many by the back-biting few.

They convince you that "Democracy" makes it all okay... without telling you that "Democracy is just two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for lunch."
Without the protection of the Rule of Law, it's all mob-rule, with power going to the best pitch-man regardless of whatever snake-oil s/he is selling. The best propaganda wins.

Consider the weight of each vote in local elections, the power it wields, and how that vote is diluted at the national level. WE are the sovereign. Not they. But the strengthening of Central Government diminishes our power, and so... they GROW GOVERNMENT.

In the end... YOU will be in the yoke along with the rest of us. Supporting the tyranny of your overlords will not insulate you from the consequences of their actions. Your children will feel the same chains of economic slavery as mine. And They, these power-brokers of government, will feed from us all like the vampires they are.

Two wrongs don't make a right....but three rights make a left
