Republicans gain veto-proof majority in Missouri House
Lawmakers will have a showdown with Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon after Republicans on Tuesday regained a veto-proof majority in the Missouri House.
Republican Tila Hubrecht, of Dexter, won a special election Tuesday in the 151st District, according to the Associated Press. That gives Republicans 109 seats, or the two-thirds majority required to override Nixon's numerous vetoes.
Republicans already hold a veto-proof majority in the Senate.
The special election winners, which will also likely include Republican
Shawn Sisco, of Rolla, will be sworn in Sept. 10, when lawmakers will convene to consider overriding Nixon's veto of 32 bills, including ones extending Missouri's one-day abortion waiting period to 72 hours and allowing specially trained teachers to carry concealed guns in public schools, and 136 budget sections.
