Mitt Romney's Record On Affirmative Action In Massachusetts

He is such a lying sneak. And, he has no intention of protecting ANY civil rights. But then, that's why the right loves him. He'll take his marching orders from Norquist and Rove and, if they have their way, our Democratic Republic will be a distant memory.

The right is always in favor of the old days when we had affirmative action to favor white men.

Betcha the rw's here will pile on to rant and rave about how they want THAT affirmative action back.

Or maybe they'll just attack the messenger because they know they're wrong.

Its origins dating from the early 70s, ‘affirmative action’ was a project started by private companies to reach out to minority communities in an effort to diversify their workforces.

‘Affirmative action’ was not a ‘government program,’ private companies were never subjected to ‘hiring quotas.’ Private companies are only prohibited from discriminatory hire practices.

Public sector entities such as state colleges and universities may use race as an admissions criterion to realize diversity provided such policies are narrowly tailored to realize such a compelling governmental interest. See: Grutter v. Bollinger (2003).

As to Romney, the following is more damning of the GOP candidate than his effort to repeal the state’s civil rights provisions:

Romney responded by creating an advisory panel to recommend changes. But he eventually retreated completely, leaving the state's old policies in place.

Romney is unfit to be president because he lacks conviction; had he adhered to his effort to repeal the policy, he might be deserving of more respect, but this incident among many others clearly demonstrates Romney to be a political coward.

From what I understand 'Affirmative Action' means laws against discrimination. It means equal opportunity employment.

So those that are against 'Affirmative Action', are for discrimination and against equal opportunity employment.

Is that correct? What exactly do you mean by "Abolishing Affirmative Action"?

Did Massachusetts slip back into slavery because the state wasn't forcing people to hire blacks?

Why did blacks get outraged if private companies were never subjected to hiring quotas?

It isn't a law against descrimination, we have actual laws against that, and it doesn't mean equal opportunity. Instead of equal opportunity, it is quotas based on race. If it was an equal opportunity it would be based solely on ability and/or knowledge and nothing more. We have laws against job descrimination as well. There was a time way back when affirmative action was needed, that time was brief and it is now nothing more than racism, legal racism. It needs to go.

He attempted to cut a government oversight agency (code for cutting government)- He did not attempt to end affirmative action.

From the link:

"Romney's executive order eliminated the state's Office of Affirmative Action, which required executive agencies to have civil rights officers in charge of monitoring the hiring of minorities, women and people with disabilities. A state diversity office was created, along with broad goals and guidelines."
