Climate change: Richard Lindzen and the 'cult' of global warming

  • Comments were made by professor of meteorology, Richard Lindzen
  • 'Instead of saying, oh, we were wrong, they get more fanatical,' he said
  • He says 70% of the Earth is ocean, and measuring its temperature tricky
  • He has previously blasted the IPCC for blaming humans for a global warming trend - and then glossing over the warming slowdown
An MIT professor of meteorology is dismissing global-warming alarmists as a discredited “cult” whose members are becoming more hysterical as emerging evidence continues to contradict their beliefs.

During an appearance on this writer’s radio show Monday, MIT Professor emeritus Richard Lindzen discussed the religious nature of the movement.

“As with any cult, once the mythology of the cult begins falling apart, instead of saying, oh, we were wrong, they get more and more fanatical. I think that’s what’s happening here. Think about it,” he said. “You’ve led an unpleasant life, you haven’t led a very virtuous life, but now you’re told, you get absolution if you watch your carbon footprint. It’s salvation!”

Lindzen, 74, has issued calm dismissals of warmist apocalypse, reducing his critics to sputtering rage

Lindzen, whose prediction of nothing much happening has been made a mockery of by observed temperature records. The man has reason to be butt hurt.

Delusional denier cult propaganda. Lindzen is a crank and has disgraced himself scientifically. He actually "reduces his critics to" howls of incredulous laughter and much involuntary rolling on the floor. No one takes his denialist drivel seriously.

Richard Lindzen
RationalWiki
Richard Lindzen was an atmospheric physicist at MIT until May 2013;[1] as expected, he is now a "Distinguished Senior Fellow" at the Cato Institute.[2]

Lindzen has had a long career in climatology and worked on the IPCC report. However, he became infamously embarrassing for MIT over the last decade as a member of the Bjørn Lomborg "It's not that bad!" school of global warming. Though Lindzen fully accepts AGW, he claims that predictions made by other climatologists' models are "alarmist" and that temperatures will increase by less than one degree Celsius.

Argument from authority, personified
Lindzen is probably the one most responsible for the denialist talking point about models not taking clouds into account. The Lindzen-Choi paper is the most often cited, but it's been trashed by other scientists for poor methodology and overstating its conclusions.[3][4] Naturally, Lindzen's skepticism has attracted funding from oil interests and he's worked on projects underwritten by Exxon and OPEC.[5] He is trotted out by deniers as "proof" that "real scientists disagree" about global warming and that there is no scientific consensus, even though he does accept the theory (just not most of the predictions made by the IPCC). His op-eds in popular media have increasingly fallen back on refuted denier talking points as well. This makes him a massive enabler.

He has also appeared at the Heartland Institute's conferences as the keynote speaker. This makes him a really massive enabler.[6]

Lindzen's talent seems to be making repeatedly failed predictions as well as failing to get much of his material published in peer-reviewed journals in his more "skeptical" days.

Some other stuff he's been wrong about:

  • Claiming that the link between smoking and lung cancer is "weak."[7]
  • Satellite measurements showing no warming.[8]
  • Decrease in water vapor would allow carbon dioxide to escape from the atmosphere. (He has since accepted this as refuted and calls it an "old view.")[9]
  • Solar and volcanic forcings were severely downplayed to fudge data.[10]
  • Misrepresenting the link between warming and hurricanes.[11]

To be honest there are people on both sides who are fanatical. So what?

He's talking human nature, he's not talking about whether man made climate change is happening or not.

Sure enough the delusional discount anyone that doesn't agree with their scheme, even when qualified.

Sure enouh the delusional discount anyone that doesn't agree with their scheme, even when qualified.
People "discount" Lindzen because he has been consistently wrong about many important things, his scientific work is sloppy, and he is in league with the fossil fuel industry. He is not actually very qualified either; he has a degree in mathematics, not any field of actual climate science; he has never worked in climate science...instead he taught at MIT.

Yet doctored data means nothing to you. How much grant money do you get? Or are you invested in the carbon credit scheme? Or other green technologies profiting from government monies? Or just believe every headline you read without researching their accuracy?

LOLOL.....I know what un-reasonable and very ignorant and very ideologically driven people do when the facts don't match their crackpot 'theories'....they go into deep denial of reality and latch onto insane conspiracy theories to explain away the fact that all of the scientific experts affirm just the opposite of the anti-science drivel they've been duped into believing.....I've been watching you demented denier cult retards do this for years...

There is no slowdown in global warming,” Russell Vose, the head of the climate science division at the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), said. “Or stated differently, the trend over the past decade and half is in line with the trend since 1950.

Temperatures have warmed 1.6°F since the 1880s. Projections indicate the temperatures could rise as much as 11°F by century’s end if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t slowed and that the rate of warming could reach levels unseen in 1,000 years by 2030s.

Your crackpot conspiracy theories and fraudulent denier cult myths about supposed "doctored data" mean nothing to me because they are insane nonsense only fit to dupe retards like yourself.

You never "research" the bogus denier cult blog "headlines" that you suckle on, to determine their "accuracy", you flaming hypocrite, or you would know how utterly fraudulent they are.

In the real world...

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) statement adopted by their council in 2012 concluded:

"There is unequivocal evidence that Earth’s lower atmosphere, ocean, and land surface are warming; sea level is rising; and snow cover, mountain glaciers, and Arctic sea ice are shrinking. The dominant cause of the warming since the 1950s is human activities. This scientific finding is based on a large and persuasive body of research. The observed warming will be irreversible for many years into the future, and even larger temperature increases will occur as greenhouse gases continue to accumulate in the atmosphere. Avoiding this future warming will require a large and rapid reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions. The ongoing warming will increase risks and stresses to human societies, economies, ecosystems, and wildlife through the 21st century and beyond, making it imperative that society respond to a changing climate. To inform decisions on adaptation and mitigation, it is critical that we improve our understanding of the global climate system and our ability to project future climate through continued and improved monitoring and research. This is especially true for smaller (seasonal and regional) scales and weather and climate extremes, and for important hydroclimatic variables such as precipitation and water availability.

Technological, economic, and policy choices in the near future will determine the extent of future impacts of climate change. Science-based decisions are seldom made in a context of absolute certainty. National and international policy discussions should include consideration of the best ways to both adapt to and mitigate climate change. Mitigation will reduce the amount of future climate change and the risk of impacts that are potentially large and dangerous. At the same time, some continued climate change is inevitable, and policy responses should include adaptation to climate change. Prudence dictates extreme care in accounting for our relationship with the only planet known to be capable of sustaining human life.[71]"

You mean the 0.5deg change in your lifetime? What does that mean to a squirrel?
Nothing much IS happening historically speaking. The shouting is all about theories claiming the Earth will destroy itself if there is a 2deg temperature spike. If that was the case -- wouldn't be any squirrels around to ask..

One study. And the jerky prediction of "RATES of warming unseen in 1000 years by 2030" is a laugh riot. Note it didn't say TEMPERATURES unseen in 1000 years. Only "rates".. Bit more honest at least. That's really a kick in the teeth to the claims made by Mann and other hockey stickers..

Yeah yeah. Lindzen predicted nothing much would happen. Now he's revealed to be the idiot he is he's all butt hurt about it.

I note as is usual for deniers you give no support for your instantly falsifiable assertions of fact, not to mention your straw men. Same ol' same ol'.

Nope! Wrong again, fecalhead, as usual. There are numerous studies confirming that global warming, or the increase in the total heat content of the atmosphere, the oceans, the land masses, and the ice sheets and glaciers, has continued unabated over the last several decades.

Here's more reports on other studies from several years ago

And the jerky prediction of "RATES of warming unseen in 1000 years by 2030" is a laugh riot.
It only seems funny to you because you're an ignorant retard who can't understand the science. Both the 'rate of warming' and 'future temperature increases' are important parts of this matter scientifically. They covered both. The whole manufactured hoopla over the non-existent 'pause' was about a supposed decrease in the 'rate of warming' over the last (specifically) 18 years compared to the previous several decades. Beginning a trend analysis in 1998, as the denier cult propaganda pushers always do, amounts to a kind of statistical trickery, cherry-picking the hottest year on record by a long shot and then claiming that temperatures since then haven't increased compared to that exceptionally hot year. Of course, starting a trend analysis a few years earlier, or, even better, a few decades earlier (or even a few years later) reveals that the previous upward trend in temperatures was continuing to rise, interrupted by only a sharp upward tick in the graph in 1997-98, but without any real 'pause' afterwards compared to the preceding decade. And, all of that was only the near surface atmospheric temperature record. The oceans were sucking up about 93% of the excess heat energy that the elevated level of CO2 in the air was preventing from escaping into outer space, and they were rapidly heating up, even to unexpected depths. Land surface temperatures continued to increase over this last two decades also, melting northern permafrost areas and releasing methane. Enormous amounts of ice melted over this period too, from the Arctic, Greenland, Antarctica, and the mountain glaciers, absorbing significant amounts of the excess heat energy the atmosphere was retaining.

Note it didn't say TEMPERATURES unseen in 1000 years. Only "rates"
It didn't have to say that specifically, at least for anyone reading it that isn't an ignorant dumbass. Why? Because it said that "temperatures could rise as much as 11°F by century’s end if greenhouse gas emissions aren’t slowed"....and anyone who knows anything about the Earth's somewhat recent climate history, like over the Holocene and the Pleistocene Epoch, knows that temperatures that much hotter (+11°F is enormous, BTW) than the present have not been seen in a very large number of 'thousands of years'; possibly not since the last interglacial period, over a hundred thousand years ago, or possibly much, much longer.

That's really a kick in the teeth to the claims made by Mann and other hockey stickers..
Nope! Wrong again, fecalhead. This whole thing about the accelerating rising temperature trend is actually in total agreement with the sharply rising recent temperature trend depicted in the (multitude of) hockey stick graphs. You have no idea what is going on, you poor clueless bamboozled retard.
