Mississippi Voters Approve Voter ID Proposal

Mississippi voters on Tuesday approved a proposed constitutional amendment to require that voters present government-issued identification at the polls.

The issue has been debated at the Mississippi Legislature for 15 years. Republican Sen. Joey Fillingane of Sumrall with backing of the Mississippi GOP launched a petition drive that got the initiative on the ballot.

The amendment seeks to require every person voting in Mississippi to show a driver's license or other government-issued photo ID at the polls.

While supporters called it commonsense legislation, opponents said it could be viewed by black citizens as an attempt to diminish minority voting.

It was approved by a vote of 62-38 percent.

Gee, the folks who don't want people to have to prove who they are when they come to vote play the race card as their rationale. I'm shocked. The race card. Whodathunk it?

Yeah... because those persons other than whites MUST have different standards to qualify for a photo ID, right??

This hubbub over requiring people to prove who they are and that they are eligible to vote, when they vote, is beyond me

How will they check the ID of absentee voters?

With absentee ballots you have time to do proper verification, also to make sure the same person didnt vote twice. Its hard to do a background check via paperwork when you have 50 people in line waiting to vote. Therefore the logical method is to have the person present and ID as proof.
