I am motivated by altruism from time to time.
But to keep it up on a 24 hour basis over a period of years, you are nuts!
I tend to think that the idea was to spread good cheer "Casually" as if it was second nature or to mind others needs and help them if you can. Not to make "feeding the poor" your main life goal.
The main goal of every living thing is to lives its life. Be altruistic, but live your life!
