MISSION VIEJO, Calif. -- A Mission Viejo history teacher is being sued for making what a student calls anti-Christian comments.

Capistrano Valley High School sophomore Chad Farnan and his parents filed the lawsuit against James Corbett last week.

They allege that Corbett's remarks during an European history course promoted religious intolerance in violation of the First Amendment.

Court papers cite classroom tape recordings in which Corbett said, "When you put on your Jesus glasses, you can't see the truth," and other remarks that troubled Farnan.

Farnan says Corbett's lessons are one-sided, but the teacher's defenders say his remarks were taken out of context. Capistrano Valley junior Doug Kalagian says Corbett was being sarcastic "to help prove a point."

Here's a county paper's article about it. On the page is a link to the actual complaint, which lists nine specific (alleged) quotes ("Read the complaint online" under "Related sites").

For example, here is a prelude of the (alleged) "Jesus glasses" quote:

"How do you get the peasants to oppose something that is in their best interests? Religion. You have to have something that is irrational to counter that rational approach....[W]hen you put on your Jesus glasses, you can't see the truth."

Then there's something about why the Boy Scouts can't meet on school grounds.

Then he makes one of his most openly anti-religious points, which he comes back to in later quotes:

"In the industrialized world the people least likely to go to church are the Swedes. The people in the industrialized world most likely to go to church are the Americans. America has the highest crime rate of all industrialized nations, and Sweden has the lowest. The next time somebody tells you religion is connected with morality, you might want to ask them about that."

Then a weird bit about the side effects of Viagra. I don't see the religious connection. Here's the best part:

"So, you know, you know, if you run into somebody who is, you know, deaf and whose pants felt stiff, he's probably using the drug....They're happy, but they're deaf."

Then something about governement reactions to teen sex, from teaching abstinance (which "doesn't work" and is "idiotic" to spend money on) to supplying birth control pills (which he says doesn't make girls suddendly want to have sex). Best part:

"My mother has a solution to this problem. ... My mother thinks that all boys, when they reach puberty, should be given a reversable vasectomy..."

Next,

"...[C]onservatives don't want women to avoid pregnancies. That's interfering with God's work. You got to stay pregnant, barefoot, and in the kitchen having babies until your body collapses."

He adds that conservatives of all religions have this attitude and are "vitally interested in controlling women."

The last three are especially meaty but they're long and I'm too lazy to type them out (can't cut and paste from a pdf).

My observations on the PDF file.

a. Valid but a little too snarky for a public school classroom.

b. Valid statement.

c. Invalid projection void of correlative evidence

d. Totally inappropriate subject in terms of his class topic and age of students.

e. Totally inappropriate subject in terms of his class topic. Also, his arguement is no help for birth control education in schools because his logic is a little spotty.

f. While he remains consistant in his criticism across the range of dogma he is still generalizing to a point where I can understand a reason for complaint.

g. While I appreciate the correlation he makes between religion serfs in a "whats the matter with kansas" sort of way he clearly goes to far to inject his political ideals by ranting on the far right and rush limbaugh. By this point he is not teaching historic material but using it as a conduit to inject his politics into the lesson.

h. I agree with the premise of his statement. Kids CAN get pot easier than alcohol and, certiainly, the drug war has been ineffective. His wager proves the point to be made. However, I don't think it is appropriate to tell his class that the only reason inner city kids get busted more is due to proximity of other people. Nor is it appropriate to gloss over the fact of its criminality and act like a teacher knows, and is ok with, high school kids smoking pot.

i. Punishment does work. it may not work as well as random positive reinforcement but it does work. he is being disingenuous in order to force a point. he should talk to a behaviourist.

Also, again he makes a false correlation between religion, punishment and southern location.



If this were a gladiator event and I were ceasar I'd have my thumb to my neck. Allowing this kind of behaviour creates more of it and gives christians a (valid) arguement against public schools. This guy should be reprimanded by his school district and I bet the kid will win his suit.

If so, then before we harshly criticize another nation’s theocratic laws, we should clean up our own.
