Minnieapolis Bridge collaspes in rush hour

http://www.asce.org/reportcard/2005/index.cfm

Our countries engineers feel it in bad shape.

You are aware of who for 50 years ran congress and stopped using the gas tax for maintenance of our highways as it was originally intended? Who it is that would rather spend billions on welfare and pennies on infrastructure?

It takes years for infrastructure to go bad, years of mismanagement and poor maintenance. Or years of NOT building new infrastructure like California and the dams , dikes and the 20 years of no new power facilities.

ASCE estimates that $1.6 trillion is needed over a five-year period to bring the nation's infrastructure to a good condition. Establishing a long-term development and maintenance plan must become a national priority. But in the short term, small steps can be taken by the 110th Congress, as well as state legislatures and local communities, to improve our nation's failing infrastructure.

It seems the the structural Engineers of this country think it could have been done in five years.

To bad we spent the money tearing Iraq and appart and then shipping pallets of money (which then disappeared) over there and then getting swindled by Haliburton instead.

Your intelligence and analytical skills are sorely lacking. They do NOT say the poor state occurred in 5 years, they say that it can be FIXED in 5 years. But then your not know for your stellar intelligence and logic on this board.

You are aware ( well maybe not) that the gas tax ( federal) was created to build and MAINTAIN our interstate highways and that the democrats changed that years ago to using the money for what ever they wanted? Just as the democrats refuse to mark Social Security taxes for just Social Security, rather preferring it be general funds so they can pay for all their pet projects.

Why is this "using" anything but facts?

Tell me why you think this bridge Just collapsed ?

It was obviously in use for years why now?

Look at yourself---it happened 3 hours ago. People are dead, search and rescue is occurring as we speak and YOU are going to try to tell ME it was because of IRAQ ????????

From your link...

The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 established the Highway Trust Fund and stipulated that 100% of the gas tax be deposited into the fund.

and...

From 1990 to 1997 a portion of the tax went to general funds. Lets recall who took over the Congress in 94 so by 97 was able to return the fund to highway maintanence. Shall we?

Also a large portion goes not to infrastructure but to mass transit. A waste of funds.

The reason that 100 percent in 56 went to highways was because Eisenhower created the highway system as a national defense act. Highways were required to be straight for x number of miles out of every x amount of sction for the purpose of acting as emergency airstrips in the case of an all out war. Further the national system was created for the purpose of ensuring strategic movement between any location in the country to another was able to be done more efficiently and quickly.

We waste a good amount of the fund on building new highways before maintaining the old ones. Our bridges and infrastructure have been in decline for years. Ask Senator Byrd how many Highways in West Virginia he has had built.

LMAO and here being from the area I thought I'd come on here and put of a poll to see how long it would take someone to start the blame game. Thanks for stealing my thunder TM.

For the record the bridge was last checked for structural integrity in 2006.

It was not stopped for use in maintainance.

The gas tax has a parallel to the tollway system here in Illinois.

Initially, drivers were asked to pay tolls until the state could recoup the money spent to build the highways. Then, once the highways were paid for, the tolls would go away. That was 30 years ago. The tolls on our tollways are still here.

But your hints and insistance that the Iraq war had something to do with are just fine and dandy right?

We have wasted more money in Iraq than it would take to fix this problem.

Its called bad priorities.

We should be rebuilding America not Iraq.

No its Bad priorities.

This is the bridge report for the nation.

Do you want to ignore why this very possibly happened?

Will that help the people who were killed and injured in this horror?

Hang on toots----you ain't starting this "what if" shit with me again. Your obsession to lay every tragedy at the feet of this adminstration is bullshit.

You are aware not one penny of the money spent in Iraq would have ever been raised or spent on bridgesin the US? Your claim is absolute horseshit.

You have got to be kidding. The money spent in Iraq is what caused the 35W bridge to collapse? Give me fucking break and get a clue while you're at it. Again the bridge was last checked just last year and no structural deficiencies were found. Can you not accept that sometimes bad things just happen and they aren't anybodies fault.

I knew the left would blame the right for this somehow. I just didn't think it would take under 4 hours.

And not to nitpick but please learn the correct spelling of the city would ya
