Military Requirement

clearly you aren't aware of all the self-serving assholes and dumbasses that are veterans. that might make them perfect politicians, but i think we need to cast a wider net to find the best people for the job.

being a veteran doesn't automatically make you wise, intelligent, caring, or even a good person.

Disagree.

Not for any Federal office.

But maybe for a handful.

Such as the Secretary of Defense... or the Secretary of the Army or Navy or Air Force.

And, perhaps, the Presidency and Vice Presidency and Speaker of the House.

But I think we're 200+ years too late, to put that into the Constitution.

Still, such a tradition would be comforting, to members of the Armed Forces and veterans.

Given that the person(s) sending our boys and girls into harms' way actually understand what that means, at the gut-level.

As to enfranchisement, however, well, that's probably fairly far overboard.

Although that, too, has its attractions.
make the military (more of) the specialist of the special interest groups?

Perhaps I'm just being dense about this, but I don't understand what you're driving at.

no politician really has the balls to cut back military spending now. what do you think would happen if all politicians had to be former military? think we'd ever see anything other than exponentially increasing defense budgets? would there be any benefit denied to veterans?

they would become the most special of all the special interest groups.

I feel that anyone who wants to hold federal office must be a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. How many current members of Congress have had the moral courage to serve the nation that has given so much to them and the world? (Btw...I think military service should be a requirement to vote.)

This country would be VERY different if that had been the case since day 1. We would probably still be ruled by the Federalist Party.

What is it about serving in the military that makes someone more qualified for an elected office?

American citizens can have the same respect and sovereignty for the United States as any serviceman or servicewoman.

You're entitled to your opinion and to express it – regardless how ridiculous, unwarranted, and un-Constitutional.

I think everyone that votes should have to do something besides being 18, sucking up good clean air and collecting dust. Being a member of the armed forced could be one of the qualifications to vote. Maybe we could also make paying taxes as a qualification to vote. Maybe a qualification could be one that does a certain amount of volunteer service for those that are not physically fit for military service or unable to work. Don't you think that at least one of these criteria should be met to qualify you to vote? I have done all three of the above and my vote can be killed by a dope smoking unemployed 18 year old that still sleeps on his daddy's couch.

That is the stupidest idea ever. Do you wish to live in a military dictatorship? Do you long for a police state? There are plenty of those hell holes you can go live in if you wish to.

Let's go even further - any United States citizen applying for government employment - at any level - should have served at least four years in a uniformed service beforehand. Male AND female!!!

I completely agree. If you're gonna vote, you should know what it is like to serve the country.

The rest of you pansies stay home and watch your soaps. o_O
