Middle School Teacher Motivates Kids By Burning 2 American Flags

If the schools/teachers are terrified of parents suing them, perhaps they need to reexamine the the liberal school environment that is causing such idiotic lawsuits. There never before was a problem with any teacher putting a restraining hand on a kid's shoulder. What has changed? Does the liberal school system really think it is not at all their fault? Maybe the school union needs to stop supporting liberal politics which promulgates ideas about "student rights" that probably cause such demented lawsuits.

Was it the unions that propegated the ideas of "students rights?" Why would the unions be interested in doing that? It has done nothing but make MORE work for teachers, increased hours, meetings, training, etc.

Perhaps our liberal school system is a reflection of our society...similar trends can be seen in private business, the medical industry, etc...

I agree that the Unions are ridiculously liberal and that they support liberal ideas and agendas...but your hypothosis doesn't pass the smell test - why would teachers/unions ASK for more work, less appreciation, and more opportunitites to be sued?

Of course teachers don't "ask for it". However they continue to support the NEA which supports liberal candidates and policies which are reflected in such idiotic liberal ideas as "student rights" and "no parental right to be notified when your daughter goes for an abortion". The NEA is one of the most powerful lobby groups for the Left (right up there with the lawyers) and they are funded and supported by teachers paying union dues. Teachers are indirectly supporting (some against their will) the very things that are causing them problems.

Yes, the school system reflects the liberal side of our society.

Very good point, SE. Few people are willing to see past their pocketbooks to object to what their unions are really supporting. That goes for all unionized industries.

Gem, I think the schools kowtow to the parents on the 'scene' involving one kid. "He couldn't do his homework because his brother was playing in a basketball game last night." Teacher response, "Ok, he'll take a zero." Principal intervenes to prevent complaints to district. Same with the bully, often it's the victim who ends up with the counseling, since the bully's parents, are well, bullies too.

However, when the teacher does something 'outlandish' as this, it's bound to gain wider attention. Thus the union does get involved. The school board may well decide they'll try to deal with the 'complaints' or even lawsuits of parents, than the lawyers of the unions, with the ACLU joining them.
