Michigan Senate passes 48-month limit on welfare,

Lot's of things, all of which I'm thankful that I don't have to any great degree.

Lot's of things doesn't really qualify as an answer to the question. There are plenty of stories of people who made the decision to overcome issues to become successful. Not everyone will make those decisions, but they can.....if they really want to.

Laziness, stupidity, ignorance, bad up-bringing, lack of education, bad breaks, bad life choices, drugs, alchohol, mental instability, etc, etc, etc.

And yes, there are plenty of stories of people who made the decision to overcome issues to become successful and probably just as many who didn't.

So the question is, as a society, what do we do with the losers who just don't have what it takes?

Well, we shouldn't enable them. It's called tough love. We have 4th and 5th generation welfare receipients because they have no incentive to better themselves. Why should they work when the government will give them a monthly check just like it did mom? It's easier to get a little money for free than to work for more. Besides, some bleeding heart liberal will fight to get them a bigger piece of the pie from those evil private jet owners stealing the nation's wealth.

Most of what you cited are results of personal choice...

The question is, as a society, what do we do with the losers who just don't give a shit?

I'm all for one supplying for themself. Just supply them with a decent paying job WITH BENEFITS. If they screw that up, then I dont know. I do know this.... this is not the country I grew up in and was proud of. Cant relate to the second part of that sentence any more.

i've made this challenge twice before here on other threads and i've yet to have any one accept.

On your way home from work tonight, drive thru the part of town where the homeless live. Pick one out. Offer to take them home and move them into the extra room you have. We all have them. You know, that extra room that collects all of our extra stuff. After all, if you have that "junk room", then you have "more than you need" and it's only the right thing to do to open it up to those who are "less fortunate" than yourself. Before you get home though, swing by the grocery store and let them pick out their favorite foods that you will graciously prepare for them. While you are at it, stop by the hardware store and get a new house key made for them. Let them know that they are welcome to invite all their old street buddies over anytine they like.

How many here crying for the welfare crowd are willing to put their personal home where their mouth is? Why not? You're perfectly happy to tax those who "have more than they need" to hand a check to those "less fortunate" when it is impersonal. Step up and do of your own free will what you want the government to force others to do to make you feel good about yourself. Then we can talk.

Fuck that.

That's the kind of shit I pay and expect the government to take care of.

When the welfare tap finally runs dry on these people there will be much rejoicing in Michigan as these people will leave the state for another state that will take care of them. So to those states that get these people, I'm glad you thought it was such a good idea to cut them off in Michigan, now you can care for them.

They'll flock to CA and NY probably.

ha ha ha ha ha.

Unfortunately, this is a great gimmick and it sounds great to everyone who buys into the idea that we should not be supporting lazy people. Here is the problem with it. There is an assumption that when these people are forced off the dole that they will then go out and finally find a job and earn a living. Sorry, but while that may happen for a few, for most it will not. What will happen is that many of these people will turn to crime and find themselves being arrested and sent to prison.

Here is where the real problem lies. Twenty percent of Michigan's state budget already goes to imprisoning criminals. They are spending close to $2 billion per year on running the prison system, and even this past year, they added even more inmates as the bad economy has turned more people to crime. So what will actually happen is that the state will save a few million on welfare payments and turn around and be forced to spend tens of millions more on locking these people up in prison.

If we want to get these people off of welfare, we need to find a way to train them and get them into the workforce. Just throwing them off of welfare will only change where we throw our tax dollars, and in fact might actually cost more. These are just realities. It has nothing to do whether you agree or disagree with supporting people through a welfare system.

I thought we won the war on poverty?

anyway, look, this is a hell of a time to do something like this,I agree.

but on one hand doing it when things are good, ( and they have not been in Michigan for over a decade) is optimal sounds goo, but theres folks who will say- hey we got the money why you do this now? and of course they follow that up with the usual hackery, will be kids in the streets starving yada yada, which proved to be false.

then you have the folks now who say hey, we have to tax folks to pay for this, we have high taxes already, we are running out of money and there has to be a limit. I don't see anything in there that says thr time limit starts retroactively.

so, they have, what 5 years? from now? *shrugs*

Michigan has always been one of the easiest states to come to and get LOTS of welfare...
I have no problem with people that hit hard times and need help for "awhile", but not forever! Michigan's had alot of that recently!
I have a problem though when it comes to people like my ex-daughter in law. When she left my son, she had 2 kids from a previous marriage, and they had 2 boys together. She's remarried, her husband very seldom has a job, they now have a total of 8 kids living in that house, my son pays his child support on time all the time....the boys have NO good clothes or anything else unless we buy it for them. They are all covered through medicaid (my son has the boys covered through his insurance too), they get quite alot in food stamps, the state has had to pay for all of her recent births....thank God my son is soon going for custody to get them out of that house. But my point is, people like them need to be put on some type of limit of what the state will do for them. As long as they know someone is going to take care of what they need, most will do nothing about it.

Savings to the state would total $77.4 million, including $65 million in the general fund.

I know what goes on, people work under the table, they sell drugs, they have more kids to get more money, they don't get married... on and on.. it's a endless cycle and i sure as hell would'nt call 77 million chump change. How long should they stay on welfare? people like you don't know anything about what goes on it seems to me.

This is wonderful news...The free ride may soon be over.Four years is very generous.I would be surprised if anyone would have a problem with this.
Wait I better rephrase that...I know some here will have a problem with that.I should say I will be surprised how anyone COULD have a problem with this.
Some here want unemployment benefits to those who have collected for 99 weeks already getting their benefits extended.
I'm sure those same people would want unlimited welfare.

It's a step in the right direction, but I would have gone much further and denied welfare benefits to anyone who has children out of wedlock. That's the cause of about 70% of people being on the welfare roles in the first place.

Sure.

Just let them all starve and fall dead in the streets..

Jerk.

What happens to them is neither my problem nor my responsibility. This is a country of individual responsibility. If you make stupid decisions then you pay the consequences.

And please stop pretending like you're so pious. You're real sympathetic to the welfare state as long as someone else is footing the bill. There's nothing moral about that.

You have no idea what America would look like if any sane person agreed with your simplistic view of the poorest among us.

You'd be tripping over bodies on your way down to the local bar. Jerk.

He's a jerk because he doesn't agree with you?? LMAO

Guess I'm a jerk to because you bleeding hearts slay me.

You seem to think that we taxpayers should be responsible for other peoples responsibilities.

Generations live on welfare because there is no incentive for them to do otherwise. As long as our asshole Govt is willing to put hard earned taxpayer dollars in their hands they will be more than willing to take any and all they can get.

They don't care who busts their ass to earn a living and pay taxes as long as their EBT card has money in it. As long as the Medicaid covers the medical expenses and they never give a thought to paying any of it back.

If have no problem with your money going to support them then open your wallet and checkbook and make yourself feel good about yourself. I'm sure there are many bleeding hearts just like you out there.

Take care of all those poor downtrodden folks. Believe me. They'll let you.

Chirt....... Chirp..........Chirp...... Is right.

Don't hold your breath there my friend.

Its so much easier to spend everyone else's money.

If they had to spend just their own money believe me their feel good about themselves bleeding hearts would dry up pretty damned quick.

Yep! Third time I've issued this challenge on USMB and the third time the socialist spenders are dead silent when confronted with actually personally doing what they preach. Funny ain't it?

Yeah........but the problem with that is it ain't the gubmint's job. Let's cut out the middle man. Take the gubmint out of the picture. Congress can pass a law forcing each person to take in one person less fortunate than them. It's an idea that each bleeding heart liberal should love and embrace.......because I'm sure they are already doing their part as it is. :eusa_whistle:

The whole "take in a homeless person" gambit you're playing doesn't prove anything. There's a difference between wanting to help people and inviting someone into your home, with all that entails. Nice try, but the only person you're fooling is yourself.

I agree that welfare shouldn't last nearly as long as it does, but I also agree that the simplistic view of the poor as lazy is infantile, holier-than-thou, and unrealistic. It's easy for people to make the poor into boogeymen...but no society in history has solved the poverty problem. It will always exist.

If people could just magically find jobs whenever they wanted to, our unemployment rate wouldn't be as high as it is right now. "Kick 'em off welfare...then they'll find a job"...it doesnt work that way.

Oh...and the idea that welfare recipients have the money to MOVE (from Michigan or anywhere else) shows your lack of common sense. Poor people don't have the money to move.
