Michelle Obama Wants More Influence on President's Agenda

For weeks, Michelle Obama had been telling her staff and closest confidantes that she wasn't having the impact she wanted. She is a woman of substance, with a background in law, public policy and management, who found herself relegated to role model in chief. The West Wing of the White House -- the fulcrum of power and policy -- had not fully integrated her into its agenda. She wanted more.

So, earlier this month, she changed her chief of staff, and now she's changing her role.

Her new chief of staff, Susan Sher, 61, is a close friend and former boss who the first lady thinks will be more forceful about getting her and her team on the West Wing's radar screen. The first thing Sher said she told senior adviser David Axelrod, whom she has known for years: When I call, "you need to get back to me right away."

But Michelle Obama is just getting warmed up with her mission to be the most relevant first lady in history.

Each morning, Sher attends White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s staff meeting. Meanwhile, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, the first lady’s press secretary, is right there at White House press secretary Robert Gibbs’ daily meetings.

They’re all focused on raising the stakes. “It isn’t just about hugging,” Sher said. “Whatever she talks about will bring press and interest, but it’s important that she’s not just talking [but] actually moving forward on those issues.”

Your thread title carried a completely different message than the one in the Washington Post article. Your and Newsmax title both say Michelle is trying to influence the president's agenda. The WP article reads that she demands substance.

Don't try to place Newsmax on the same level as WP. It's just you attempting to give Newsmax undeserved credibility.

she should do like first ladies are suppose to do..pick a damn project and work with it....lady bird ...beautification of america...started all the roadside flowers...planted now on highways....mrs laura bush worked with literacy programs....m obama...needs to find her a cause and promote it.
i think it would be nice if she did something with inner city youth or vets and their needs...get involved get busy...
