A Marine languishing in a Mexican prison on what his supporters call a trumped up gun charge was made an example by an overzealous prosecutor in a case that begged for discretion, his lawyer said.

Jon Hammar Jr., who was caught just inside Mexico's border with his grandfather's antique, Sears & Roebuck shotgun while on the way to Costa Rica with a pal, should have been scolded and sent on his way minus the family heirloom, said Eddie Varon-Levy. Instead, Hammar has spent the last four months in one of Mexico's most dangerous prisons. Varon-Levy blamed the outgoing administration of President Felipe Calderon and his attorney general, Marisela Morales, who he said took their zero tolerance approach too far.

"The administration of Felipe Calderon and Attorney General Marisela Morales has had the attitude that they have to make examples of people that laws have to be enforced," said Eddie Varon-Levy, 52.

This is a bunch of bullshit. obama of course is silent as shit, he's okay with running guns for the cartels, but won't lift a finger for this innocent marine.

Make an example.. LOL! They hate us for half-ass enforcing their laws, so they make an example. Fuck them bastards and fuck obama for not helping.

Everyone who cares about this American should be in immediate contact with you legislators. Make a noise.

Every American should boycott travel to Mexico until this Marine is returned.

What kind of fool takes a gun with him while traveling across several countries with varying gun control laws?

The dipshit was DRIVING from the US to Costa Rica.

That means the genius decided to take a shotgun while driving through the US, Mexico, Guatamala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica, and back again.

He's lucky he was caught in Mexico and not one of the other shitholes.

"If you want to bring a handgun, revolver, or pistol in to Costa Rica, you must follow the required procedure:"

Inform the airline that you are traveling with a weapon. More specifically, the weapon must be placed in your (checked) luggage in an approved container, either hard shell or soft shell. Ammunition must be placed in a separate approved container but can be taken on the same flight. You must fill out paperwork beforehand, normally at the airport. Check with the individual airline for their policies on this.

Once your gun arrives in Costa Rica, the weapon will remain at the Customs office until you have registered the weapon at the Ministry of Public Security (Ministerio de Gobernación, Policía y Seguridad Pública) in the Department of Firearms and Ammunitions.

There, you must provide the following documents:

Official Registration of the firearm with the corresponding authorities of your State of residence (Secretary of State and or Police Department). This document must be duly certified by the Costa Rican consulate. You must send or take these records to a Costa Rican consulate in your home country and have the certification done there. This is normally about $45.00 per document.

Police record from the Police precinct where you have legally reside for the last six (6) months. This document must be no older than six (6) months, and must be duly certified by the Costa Rican consulate, please follow the authentication procedure above for that record also.

Weapon Entrance Proof of Receipt issued by the Customs/Airport authorities in Costa Rica.

The results of your psychological test, taken in Costa Rica, that evaluates your personality traits.

Moving Firearms, Guns, Rifles, Shotguns or other weapons to Costa Rica

Did someone say "psychological test"?

Ex-Marine Jon Hammar headed south with fellow veteran Ian McDonough on what was supposed to be a few months of surfing and camping in a Winnebago in Costa Rica. The two had recently finished a treatment program for post-traumatic stress disorder, which Hammar suffered after fighting in Fallujah, Afghanistan, according to his mother, Olivia Hammar.

Better yet boycott these fucking countries.

Some dipshit decides to ignore the gun laws of multiple countries and that is THEIR fault? Really?

"Gun laws are for other people. I will just ignore them and bring my shotgun through their sovereign territories."

.

A very quick google search, which the dipshit could easily have done as well, reveals this at the top of the search results:
Mexico's gun laws are quite restrictive, and extremely harsh if you run afoul of them.

As the Marine is now learning firsthand.

Temporary gun import licenses for sporting purposes may be issued to tourists, discussed below.

Mexican law provides penalties of at least five to as many as 30 years in prison for tourists who attempt to bring a firearm, or even a single round of ammunition, into Mexico without prior permission.

Dumbass.

.

1) He told US authorities about the gun and they told him to report it to the Mexicans.
2) He shouldn't be going to Mexico.
3) He shouldn't carry a gun outside the US unless working for the US Govt.
4) Obamination or Clinton should call Mexico to demand he be released since he meant no harm and reported his gun to them.
5) If Mexico ignores the demand to free him, then cut off their aid on the spot and make hell on every Mexican trying to cross our border.

That fucking cessspool is lucky we haven't wiped them off the face of the Earth with our military.

He did not have prior permission to bring the gun into Mexico, which they require.

How stupid do you have to be to decide not to check the gun laws of the multiple nations you are going to be travelling through, and get all the necessary permits and licenses, if you are going to be toting a goddam shotgun with you?

"Oh, that's too much trouble. I will just chance it, even if everyone knows Mexico doesn't tolerate tourists bringing so much as a single bullet into their country without prior approval. 5 to 30 years in prison? Bah! I'll take my chances."

The Marine was driving to Costa Rica with nine surfboards, a friend, and a shotgun, to go surfing.

He did not want to fly because of the nine surfboards. I guess you need nine surfboards to surf.
