We mentioned photodynamic therapy last year in theUSMB Aldo Leopold thread, because of Leopold's interest in grasses, whose symbiotic microorganisms produce aminolevulinic acid, the main compound used in PDT. PDT is also used for skin cancers such as basal cell carcinoma, and may someday be included in therapies for ovarian and other internal cancers.

Hypericin is a 5-HT re-uptake inhibitor from Hypericum perforatum (St. John's wort)

The Mexican workers in OP's report used 5-ALA PDT rather than hypericin-PDT. A 1998 report is similar to the Mexican study in that it used dihematoporphyrinether (5-ALA is the link to protoporphyrin IX):
