I do not appreciate the contradictions of some of the customs we have come to believe in both the church and in family tradition. When I was younger, I was told to believe that Christmas was the birthday of Jesus Christ. But when reading more into this subject, I find that most theologians believe the birthday of Jesus was early fall. And I still don’t quite understand why Christians choose to build a tree and decorate it each year. On December 25th (which is actually the original birthday of Mithra, a pagan diety) the ancient greeks would chop down trees and decorate them in the name of their god, Adonia.

Regardless of the lies, half-truths, or justifications that Christians or any other group believe about Christmas. I think we all agree one thing; there is something special in our country during this time of year for children. If one thinks about it for a minute the travelers from afar brought gifts to the child...not every adult which happened to be standing around the stable.

The commercial aspects of Christmas have grown exponentially until now big corporations see 20%-25% of their years sales within a few weeks around Christmas. P.T. Barnum said, "There's A Sucker Born Every Minute."

Cammmpbell have you ever considered seeking psychiatric help for your mental condition?

I'm 77 years old and retired to a lakeside brick rancher 17 years ago after supervising up to 41 computing and telecommunications employees in one of the largest mainframe computer centers in the country for 25 years. No....it never occurred to me.

How's your hammer hanging

Hey fellow old person.

Many Christians in the USA dont much like to think about the religions of others.

They prefer EVERYONE just pretend their religion is the ONLY one on earth and the ONLY one that gets to have holidays.

We all know how much Jesus was about insulting others by screaming things like merry Christmas at people in hopes they can bully them into agreeing with them.

The reason for the season after all is proving that Christ won the polls for best ever deity and everyone else should just shut up.

You're going to wind up dislocating your shoulder with all this self-backpatting you like to do.
Tired of hearing it.

Why is it your mission to put stumbling blocks in others' paths?
:eusa_pray:

I generally don;t say this to atheists as I know it isn't cool to do so, but you are one that I don't care about how it makes you feel, so:

I will pray for you
:eusa_angel:

I'm not an atheist....I'm agnostic. I don't know and you don't either.

One thing I'm sure of....if there is we will all get an equal shot. Not just those who believe a fairy tale fantasy imagined by ignorant people during the stone age.

You could have stopped there, and every thing could've been cool, but you couldn't resist the urge to show your asshole, could ya?

You have me confused with the Republican party. Their representative was Scrooge before he converted to Democrat. You remember "The Christmas Carol." He forgave loans, increased wages (Bob Cratchit), hired Bob's young son and provided free healthcare to Tiny Tim. But most of all, he gave to the poor.

See the hate they just love spewing in the name of Jesus

Most of them haven't even read the new testament and few of them can quote ten sentences chapter and verse from memory. They constantly bad mouth Muslims when many of them have memori ed the entire quoran...every word by book, verse and in order. Some Muslim children have the entire quoran memori ed by the time they are in their teens and they pray multiple times a day...not that I believe that dose of horse shit any more than any other.

You're absolutely right in that most of what Christmas is, and especially today, about is based on Paganism.

Firstly, a knowledgeable and/or educated Christian knows that Jesus was not born on the 25th of December nor anywhere near that time of year. In fact, no one knows exactly when He was born, however, it's an educated surmization (sp) that it was certainly not during what is now the Christmas season based on many factors that historians and theologians have discovered. We've been "debating" this in our denomination for as long as I've been born and before over the celebration of Christmas, as we've known this for about as long as we've existed.

It boils down to a couple key things. Aside from it being really a good time for children, which we would be making suffer were we to exclude them from the season celebration in the Western Culture, it's the one time of year that just about everyone in the world's minds are at least open to the thought and concept of Jesus Christ. Meaning that it's perhaps THE best time to minister to them.

Also, if we are going to fall on the sword of Paganism, then we should stop calling the names of the days of the week. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday as they are all Pagan names, based on Pagan gods. All or nothing right? Or something like that.

This issue is something that resonates with me personally as I've been keenly aware of this, basically from the time I exited childhood. The commercialism of the season, the shopping, now every year there's violence associated with the shopping, the holiday season is beginning way earlier, to get the deals, etc. It's totally and completely bastardized...but hey, that's the American way. Commerce is everything..or at least that is what many like to think and/or preach.

The best way to look at it is to take what positives you can from the time. Mostly for the kids. Of course, over and above that it's a time that people are more receptive to hearing the Gospel...and that's always a good thing. Always.

I am impressed, not. You are still nuts.

Correct.

Europeans among others have observed the Winter Solstice for millennia, to celebrate the days growing longer and the coming advent of Spring.

Christianity in general and ‘Christmas’ in particular are a recent veneer layered atop this ancient tradition.

But it is sad and a truism for almost 100 years now that the actual meaning of this time of year is lost in the greed and avarice of commercialism. It is incumbent upon everyone to remember the true meaning of this time of year: forbearance, forgiveness, and charity.

That's because they're instructed from birth, they're forced to memorize and pray multiple times..it's normal for them! Not at all like Christians that have a CHOICE, and a close communication with God. WE can talk to HIM anytime we want....not so with muslims.
