Well, technically, using feminine hygiene products is optional, too, although the non-product option is kinda messy.
Actually I think this is a goof idea. The pantries and emergency shelters can always use a little help taking care of the poor that are in immediate need of a little help.
 
I'm probably the only person on the planet that thinks this is actually a good idea, for real. I have rolled pennies and hunted for change under the seats of the car for enough $ to buy a box of tampons. They're not cheap, but like the article says, it's not like we've got a choice. I don't know why they have to put tampon machines in the student union, instead of in the bathrooms, though. Probably so the guys can tell who's on the rag and be forewarned.

Phew, I am glad this is just a tampon issue. When I read the thread title I thought scientists had found a way to force men to menstruate.

(why don't they call it womenstruate?)
