SMB is Snow Mass Balance, a figure of net loss or gain. The topic is the increased melt rate that has been developing over the last decade or so. This last summer has been a rather cool one in Greenland. In addition, fresh snow increases the albedo of the ice sheet and slows melt rates.

Be that as it may, Greenland's, over the long term, is shrinking and its meltwater is adding significantly to global sea level rise.
