WASHINGTON — Immigration reform will be shelved for streamlined enforcement of current laws in the legislative priorities under a new Republican-controlled House, Rep. Lamar Smith said Tuesday.

“The enforcement of our immigration laws is critical to both our national security and economic prosperity. We need to know who is entering our country, and why,” the San Antonio Republican said.

Smith is expected to become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in the next Congress. He laid out his potential priorities for the panel Tuesday.

He said the committee under his leadership would “enact policies that will better secure our border and discourage illegal immigration, human smuggling and drug trafficking.”r.

Smith and other GOP leaders support Arizona in its crackdown on illegal immigration, and they oppose birthright citizenship and earned-citizenship proposals.

In addition to immigration enforcement, Smith said his committee would revisit plans to close the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention center, take up patent reform legislation, crack down on frivolous lawsuits and combat child pornography and exploitation.

Didn't someone say the Republicans have no plans?

That says it all! You guys are going to ruin what is good about this country. Good thing they weren't in control when your ancestors came to this country.

Great news. Hope they have good success with it. I'm tired of hearing all the Spanish every time I go to Wal-mart or anywhere else in this country.

Does your country have birthright citizenship?

I am a natural born citizen of the US.

My grandparents were LEGAL immigrants Luissa. What about yours?

My ancestors were here before the US was a country. On my father's side they fought in the Revolution, and on my mom's side they were the natives and Quakers, also here before the Revolution. And your grandparents were legal, probably because there was no immigration laws.

Now if they had only won the revolution you might have a valid argument

What are you talking about?

The issue here is those who follow the rules get the benefit of following the rules. those who break the rules don't benefit from their cheating.

While the people who follow the rules still get screwed, because some have their heads so far up their asses, that they cannot see real solutions.

Hmmm... with illegals putting all kinds of gunk in the system... anchor babies tying up resources in the system... and no enforcement on existing law... I do not doubt that some people are indeed screwed.... but what you don't realize is that it is a result of the illegals

I know who committed the crime, but there is some things that could be put in place so I don't get screwed. I had an illegal use my SSN to work, and they do this all the time.
It is easy to say this is terrible, and should be stopped, but what is a REALISTIC solution?
