You hear this a lot with racial issues. "Virulent racism", as in, you aren't just wrong about race, you've actually got a virus; "spew hatred", as in, you are gastrointestinally ill, not just stating an unpopular opinion, etc.
Truth is, the real "sickness" is political correctness. It gets into brains and causes peoples to become self-destructive.
