Ahh yes, the myth that huge deficits can be cured by trimming pork barrel spending. An oldie but goodie, much like the idea that we just need to pass some reforms so that our money is spent wisely.

The reality is that if you want to make big fat juicy cuts in federal spending, you need to cut the military, social security, medicare, and medicaid. All of which would be a good thing. Cutting welfare and pork barrel stuff and corporate subsidies only goes so far.

Raise retirement age to the average life expectancy (fairly close to the original program, SS age was 65, avg life exp was 63 so today it should be about 81 or so).

Plug the fraud in medicare/medicade and you'd go a long way. Or just get rid of it and replace with standard private health insurance with some government aid in premium payment....

Take micromanagement of the military away from Congress, allow Congress to only thumbs up or thumps down major weapon systems. Freeze requirements after initial design thus keeping every new General assigned to a program from completely changing the requirments (Never ending requirement changes are the single biggest factor in cost busting of weapon system development).

I don't know how you would cut the entitlement programs considering that seniors are now dependent on these programs. A gradual cutting of these programs are needed though, if not they will lead to the bankrupting of our federal government.
