Few advisers in John McCain's inner circle inspire more loyalty from him than campaign manager Rick Davis. McCain and his wife, Cindy, credit the shrewd, and sometimes volatile, Republican insider with rescuing the campaign last year when it was out of money and on the verge of collapse. As a result, McCain has always defended him—even when faced with tough questions about the foreign lobbying clients of Davis's high-powered consulting firm. "Rick is a friend, and I trust him," McCain told NEWSWEEK last year.

Last week, though, McCain's trust in Davis was tested again amid disclosures that Freddie Mac, the troubled mortgage giant that was recently placed under federal conservatorship, paid his campaign manager's firm $15,000 a month between 2006 and August 2008. As the mortgage crisis has escalated, almost any association with Freddie Mac or Fannie Mae has become politically toxic. But the payments to Davis's firm, Davis Manafort, are especially problematic because he requested the consulting retainer in 2006—and then did barely any work for the fees, according to two sources familiar with the arrangement who asked not to be identified discussing Freddie Mac business. Aside from attending a few breakfasts and a political-action-committee meeting with Democratic strategist Paul Begala (another Freddie consultant), Davis did "zero" for the housing firm, one of the sources said. Freddie Mac also had no dealings with the lobbying firm beyond paying monthly invoices—but it agreed to the arrangement because of Davis's close relationship with McCain, the source said, which led top executives to conclude "you couldn't say no."

Didn't I hear that Obama had received the 2nd most from Fannie Mae even though he has been in Congress for such a short period of time?

Anonymous sources, eh?

Last time NewsWEEK ran with anonymous sources people rioted because they thought you could fit an entire Koran down a government issued, low-flush toilet.

Who is it today, a couple of ACORN activists?

And yet McCain was still pushing reform legislation.

I guess $2 million just doesn't buy some people like it used to.

Now let's talk Obama's $126k in 2 yrs and obstructionism vs McCain's $21k over his entire term while seeking reform.

It's odd that your articles miss this GLARING contrast.

Interesting this same news magazine didn't bother to report the fact that Obama has two former Fannie Mae CEO's on his payroll -as his top two economic advisors. One of whom walked off with $90 million while driving Fannie Mae into the ground, the other of whom also helped drive it into the ground and made sure he walked off with tens of millions before moving over to Lehman to drive that company into bankruptcy too. But no fear - he made sure he got tens of millions from that company too.

Oh sure, the FAR more important story is about someone who was an employee of an advertising/lobbying firm that was paid by Fannie Mae to lobby Congressmen over the CEOs who actually drove it into bankrupticy and made sure they got out with a heck of a lot more money than what they were paying this firm for lobbying services while they did it. Thank God for Newsweek. Now I know -all these problems stem from a single employee of an advertising firm that was paid to lobby Congressmen who give them access even though they don't have to -and that firm (not the lobbyist who worked for the firm) still didn't get paid anywhere in the neighborhood of what other lobbying firms get from many other companies from around the world are paying. And it had nothing to do with the CEOs whose poor judgment and actions actually brought these companies to their knees. LOL And they say the media is biased in favor of Democrats. I have no idea why....

You certainly did hear it right. The list is over a 9 year period of pay-outs from these two agencies--Democrat Criss Dodd is # 1 & Barack Obama is # 2.

The poster neglects to state that the person in mention on McCain's campaign was an employee & he has not worked for either Freddie or Fannie for more than TWO years.

We have democrat Barney Franks on video--in 2001 when the Bush adminstration tried to reign them in: Quote: from Barney--there is nothing wrong with these agencies! Then a few more warnings that were completely ignored, including from fed chairman Greenspan, then again in 2005 from John McCain. There were at least 40 democrats on the hill that would block each & every new legilation to reign these agencies in.

This financial crisis lays at the feet of democrats. It's on video, & the RNC won't use them?

This topic has been beat to death, he took $126k, that is nothing, Mccain took $280k from oil companies. Whats the difference. They are both insignificant figures. Johnson was an unpaid volunteer who was also used by Mondale and Kerry so he had experience in veeping.

The crooked CEO's supposedly funding Rick Davis to secure home loans for low income people advise Obama on housing issues and other economic issues.

wrong, Rick Davis owned a lobbying firm that was hired by Freddie Mac
at least get the facts straight

So he worked for Freddie, does it really matter, do we want to compare who is taking money from who. Mccain has his hand deep in the oil companies pockets. Mccains campaign manager was paid $15,000 a month for several years until last month. Does this mean he is terrible because he knows someone that takes money from freddie and that guy is working for him.

he had NOTHING to do with the actual operation of either Fannie or Freddie
