McCain: I can't promise to support Palin for president

There are many, MANY issues I have disagreed with McCain on over the years - but I still wish he had just run his campaign as the man he was - a moderate who was VERY willing to compromise on almost every issue...rather than trying to play a conservative poorly and with disdain.

Since I already said my piece with respect to my thoughts about McCain/Palin, I won't be redundant. But I will say that if McCain had run as the moderate he was in 2K, he could have had my vote... not guaranteed because I'm at the point where I am not sure I could, in good conscience, impose another republican on this country at the Federal level. But I can tell you that, at least with respect to me, his choice of Palin made his chance at my vote zero.

I used to like McCain, too. He spoke his mind whether or not it fell in line with the Republican platform, but as soon as he decided to shoot for the Presidency, he became a Republican lap dog (not that I blame him, he had to in order to get the nomination - he sold his soul).

We can hope!

polarizing candidates are often the most successful, because they build a loyal base that gets stronger with each attack against its hero

Reagan was far more polarizing than the trail of duds the GOP has put up since, Obama was far more polarizing than the ultra-boring Gore and Kerry

McCain bent over backwards to be nice to Dems, and looked like a silly old fool in the process, which only weakened his support

so the more hardcore Dems like you get upset at the though of Palin, the better her chances really are

I don't mind her running and sucking the air out of the repub party. But unless we're talking "g-d, guns and gays", she can't win. I, do, however, think everyone should be offended by the whole "pro-America states" thing.

A rather bizarre conclusion given he selected her to be his VP and thought (?) her competent enough to be that close. But say it ain't so John, I think Sarah and Rush 2012 has a nice ring to it. Or Sarah and Hagee. What say ye?

McCain didn't necessarily think she was "good enough," necessarily. He just thought she would keep the religious right from staying home. Kennedy hated Johnson. Reagan didn't care much for Bush, Sr. So much of it is strategy.

Ya but mcCain was asked repeatedly if he thought she was the right stuff and he was firm about it.

I am not sure the others were ever asked that question about their running mates. Because their running mates made sense. I am not sure Obama was ever asked about Biden. Biden doesn't buck the mold.

Palin did. And now McCain is on record, both ways!

It's a story because she's trying to maneuver position for 2012 already. And if he thought she was the best person to be his VP, one would think he'd consider her the best presidential candidate too.

Personally, I think it's just an interesting footnote.
is she really trying to run for prez

Yep, make a list of all the Republicans that you do not like. Support all the opposition within the party, use all the Rovian tactics you can muster. I like the idea. Then maybe we will see 70 Dem Senators in 2010.

Great! The faster we seat a strong socialist majority the faster the civil war will manifest and the faster we return this nation to God, honor and the American way.

Be careful what you wish for Ivan, you may get it.

Poor Publius.

I picture him sitting on a rocker stroking his rifle waiting for the reactionary's revolution so he can kill his neighbors because they eat keesh.

He reminds me of the communist nitwits of the 60s who kept telling me about their people's revolution where they would get to kill people like him.
