A Spoiler Tag is a feature which allows you to envelop and conceal a portion of post. A clickable icon would appear in your post, and once you click on it the concealed post is revealed for you to read. This way people can talk and post about new media and stories without spoiling the secrets for anyone else.

Can you offer an example? Not sure why you'd make a post if you didn't want people to read it.

Is it like a link except you don't need an outside URL?

Here are a few examples of what Spoiler Tags are:

They have their uses, and they're Vbulletin compatible.

So does this amount to another level of "aside" or "under the breath" comment that would be visible only to the marginally interested?

Such as if I were to make this point and that's pretty much it...

but down here I say "Wake eats babies"

?

What about this technique:

SPOILER ALERT:

I just saw Titanic and the boat sinks!

Right - that's what I do now.

You could also make it smaller and thus more inconspicuous-- or even
hide it completely in white. -- the John Lennon technique

Is this the idea?

Meh.

Courteous users put a warning that a post or thread contains spoilers so that one may avoid them.

Fancy Shmancy doohickeys just clutter up a board, and often don't work when one has privacy safeguard add-ons.

Well, that's one advantage to doing it this way -- doesn't take any resources, doesn't involve any plug-ins.

You could actually write stuff that no one ever sees because they don't know it's there. Kind of double-super-secret invisible ink.

I often do....

Invisi-text is one way, but using a spoiler tag is not only more convenient, but takes up far less space in one's post.

For example, if we're going to discuss in-depth the new season of Supernatural or the very latest movies or mangas out there, you can simply tuck it neatly into a spoiler tag, and that takes up less space than a small paragraph. Invisi-text, on the other hand, leaves you with a rather large and annoying... invisible post. ALSO, if you wanted to construct a huge argument, but save on space, you could tuck away a few sections within your argument that the more interested members can simply click once to view. That'd be better than viewing an incredibly huge wall of text.
