Shooting reported at Connecticut elementary school

NEWTOWN, Conn. (WWLP-WTNH-AP) - Connecticut state police have been called in for reports of a shooting at an elementary school in Fairfield County.

Our Connecticut sister station, WTNH-TV , reports that officers were called to the Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dickenson Drive in Newtown. Lt. J. Paul Vance, Connecticut State Police spokesperson, told WTNH that several troopers were called to the school on the request of the Newtown Police Department.

There is no word on any victims at this time, and no official statement has been made about the situation at this time.

A witness told WTNH that she saw two injured children, one had a bloody face, the other with a hand injury.

All of the town's schools have been evacuated, and parents in town have been told to stay by their phones, and not to enter the school.

Updated at 1:30 p.m. ET: A young man clad in black and carrying two guns rampaged through a Connecticut elementary school Friday, killing 18 small children and seven adults in the nation’s second-worst school massacre, law enforcement officials said.

The gunman, described as a 20-year-old man from Connecticut, was later found dead, a federal law enforcement official told NBC News. Also, one of the parents of the alleged shooter was found dead this morning at a home in New Jersey

A second person was in custody for a possible connection to the school shooting.

I still cannot understand how anyone could be so distraught he/she would vent on defenseless children. While casualty less than that of Virginia Tech Shooting in 2007, I think this is the most heart-breaking tragedy in US history, due to the age of the majority of the victims.

Report: Christoper Dorner Involved in Shootout in Big Bear

Various news outlets are reporting a shootout involving the murder suspect was reported in the Big Bear area.

Murder suspect Christopher Dorner was apparently involved in a shootout with federal authorities in the Big Bear area, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department broadcasted a general advisory stating that fugitive murder suspect Christopher Jordan Dorner was possibly involved in a home-invasion robbery at 1200 block Club View Road in Big Bear.

A couple were tied up in their house, and the suspect fled in their 2008 white Dodge pickup truck with a back hitch, heading south on state Route 38, possibly toward Cherry Valley.

A state Fish & Game ranger apparently fired on the vehicle, according to the sheriff's broadcast.

The 33-year-old, who was fired from the Los Angeles Police Department officer, is suspected of killing two people in Irvine and a police officer in Riverside.

Chris Dorner manhunt: 2 officers hurt in shootout

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Two law enforcement officers are being airlifted to a local hospital with unknown injuries after a shootout in the Big Bear area with a suspect believed to be Chris Dorner.


The officer told The Associated Press it's believed Dorner committed a residential burglary of a cabin and had a couple tied up in the cabin. One was able to get away and make a call. Authorities responded to the location and gave chase when Dorner fled in a stolen car. Gunfire was exchanged.

According to San Bernardino County sheriff's spokesman Cindy Bachman, authorities were investigating a stolen vehicle by a man who looks like Dorner. It is believed that Dorner may have crashed the stolen vehicle and was on foot when shots were fired.

The area is in the Big Bear region where a search for Dorner has been under way since his pickup truck was found there Thursday.

As many as six people were killed and two to three others injured Friday when a gunman clad in black went on a rampage through Santa Monica, Calif., before being shot to death in the library of a community college, authorities said. Another individual, described as a "person of interest," was in custody, they said.

The shootings took place just three miles away from where President Barack Obama was scheduled to attend a fundraising event. The Secret Service said the incident was believed to be unrelated to the president’s visit.

Police had not yet identified the gunman or established a motive for the bloodshed.

I think the FBI reports indicate about 6 to 8 mass shootings a year. But that is just off the top of my head. I do know there has been no increase in frequency or average of victims.

Dressed in black face masks and tactical gear, armed with long guns and pistols, they entered a holiday party for county health workers as it was in full swing. Before they fled, they had killed 14 people and wounded 17.

Four hours later, as fearful residents were ordered to stay home and scores of officers swarmed the streets, authorities chased a black SUV carrying two suspects from a Redlands home. As TV news stations broadcast live overhead, authorities and the suspects traded gunfire.

When it was over, a man and woman connected to the assault were dead. One body lay in the street, blood pooling. Another was recovered from the vehicle. A police officer was also wounded in the firefight but is expected to survive.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

"Is this a terrorist incident? We do not know," said David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI's Los Angeles field office. He later said terrorism had not been ruled out as a motive.

The identities of the man and woman killed by police were not immediately released.

A senior federal official monitoring the case said investigators believe one of the shooters left the party after getting into an argument and returned with one or two armed companions. Local officials at an evening news conference said it was not clear whether the people involved in the dispute were the same people involved in the shooting.

Law enforcement sources identified one of the suspects as Syed Farook. Two separate sources said one of the suspects was an American citizen, but did not specifically name Farook.

Public records show a person named Syed R. Farook was employed by the San Bernardino County Health Department as an environmental health specialist, but it was not clear if that was the same person involved in the shooting. The party was a gathering of employees of the health department.

The FBI has arrested a Milwaukee man they say was planning a mass shooting at a Masonic temple, according to local NBC affiliate WTMJ.

Samy Mohamed Hamzeh, 23, was arrested Monday when he tried buying machine guns and silencers from two undercover FBI agents. According to a criminal complaint, the FBI recorded extensive conversations with two confidential sources to whom Hamzeh explained that he wanted to commit an act of domestic terrorism.

Acting U.S. Attorney Gregory J. Haanstad said that "Hamzeh devised a detailed plan to commit a mass shooting intended to kill dozens of people. He also said that he wanted this mass shooting to be 'known the world over.'"

Hamzeh went into detail to the confidential sources about how he wanted the shooting at the Masonic temple to unfold:

“One of us will stay at the door at the entrance and lock the door down. He will be at the main door down, two will get to the lift up, they will enter the room, and spray everyone in the room. The one who is standing downstairs will spray anyone he finds. We will shoot them, kill them and get out.

We will walk and walk, after a while, we will be covered as if it is cold, and we’ll take the covers off and dump them in a corner and keep on walking, as if nothing happened, as if everything is normal. But one has to stand on the door, because if no one stood at the door, people will be going in and out, if people came in from outside and found out what is going on, everything is busted.”
