I grew up in the 60's and saw most of the Civil Rights movement. Like most Americans, I was outraged at the assasination of Dr King. When we talked about giving him a national holiday ten years later, I looked at it as a form of appeasement for outraged blacks.....a way of giving them their own holiday to quiet them down.

In reading about the Civil Rights movement in subsequent years, I realized what a great American Dr King was. Black Americans came back after WWII to find that despite fighting and dying in defense of their country, they were still treated like lesser Americans. They found they were not allowed to mingle with whites, were not welcome in much of the country they had fought for. Blacks were considered to be dirty, diseased and sub human. Some whites were outraged at the thought of eating with blacks, using the same restrooms, riding on public transportation with them.

As black Americans began to protest their treatment in their own country they were met with harsh resistance from both white militants and governments who swore to support inequal treatment. Blacks were denied the right to vote, to freely associate, rights to a fair trial. Those who resisted were met with terrorist attacks. Lynchings, bombings, arrest and assasination of their leaders.

Most of us faced with such horrific treatment in our own homeland would fight violence with violence. When the courts did not protect blacks, armed conflict would seem a reasonable response. Dr King knew violence would only result in more violence against you. He modeled the Civil Rights movement around Gandhis peaceful resistance theories. By using cameras to document the treatment of peaceful protestors he saved this country from an armed violent protest that would have destroyed this country.

America returned from WWII as an economic and military superpower. But a country that does not treat its citizens with respect is not a moral superpower. By changing the way we treat our citizens, Dr King, more importantly, saved our soul. By forcing us to look in a mirror and see who we really are, he enabled us to become a truly great country.

On this Martin Luther King day I hope everyone can reflect on what a great American he was

I just hope people remember what his dream really was. That man will be judged according to his character and not by the color of his skin.

Skin is irrelevant. Character is everything.

Somehow the democrat party was able to turn on a dime and go from anti-communist to pro-progressive and blame all the hype on a republican senator. At the same time democrats managed to go from a segregationist party to a seemingly tolerant party in a couple of years without losing their segragationist roots. The unbalanced Kennedy brothers didn't know if their priorities were fighting communism or segregation. They managed to go to Devcon 2 and illegally evesdrop on MLK at the same time.

MLK was a top five American of all time! He was a great AMERICAN! He would be disgusted by how liberals use his name and legacy to divide us. How they use MLK day to honor black Americans. Awards in his name are given only to black students. He would hate the color/race guided thinking!

"Judge me not by the color of my skin, but the content of my character!"

Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, NAACP for today and New Black Panther Party do some studying on Martin Luther King Jr (and Fredrick Douglass while your are it)!

Meanwhile the rhetoric of their deployment stressed the inequality of the places they were deployed TO, and the IDEAL of democracy they supposedly came FROM.
And the world turns, and still the irony is lost on too many.

Read up on the Dixicrats. Read further about the Southern Strategy. Start with Nixon, continue to Regan.

Absolutely...

And Doctor King would want equal opportunity for all Americans

I enjoy watching how both sides try to use him as a wedge. The problem is that in his "I have a dream" speech, he explicitly endorsed socialiasm.....so yea.........problem #2....is that he explicitly endorsed personal responsibility.

It was a great speech, but also one that had many, many Political undertones.

It's no coincidence that both MLK and Malcolm X were assassinated as soon as they stopped divisive rhetoric and started preaching peace, tolerance and love

Well leave it to a conservative to boil down some very complex history by leaving half of it out. The Democratic party was pretty much a progressive party since about the turn of the century. After slavery was abolished, however, many of the displaced by that event, politically found a home in the Democratic party. They were known as the "Dixiecrats" who were the "pro-segrationalist" wing, so one the party embraced civil rights, they became Republicans. Democrats to this day are fiercely anti-communist and pro Democracy with a well regulated Capitalist economy. Which is part of the reason MLK was wire tapped. It was thought he was a communist.

what divisive rhetoric did MLK use?

Malcolm X was always a radical and spoke for radical interests. When he learned that he was wrong about certain things, he was killed by the people he used to speak for.

But the demands of the radicals make the demands of the moderates possible.

and those strategies resulted in what exactly? they used them to build a coalition to get elected, whoopee.....politicos use grps sects etc allllll the time. now, if they allowed them to influence or enact their odious 'former' platforms you might have a point.

And where are we now?

MLK was a great Republican. He contributed a lot to America. I don't think he "saved America"

God Bless MLK and his family.

He was a Socialist, also. I wonder the tone he's face nowadays. He promoted Responsibility and content of character, and also promoted Socialism. Weird dynamics there, in that speech.
