Mark Twain rolls over in his grave

This has been done with other works as well. It's ridiculous, shameful and it dumbs down our young ones.
From what I have observed at the mall.

Most of them couldn't get any dumber. :doubt:

Sunni, this is one of those times when perception and reality may not mesh.

I also am usually ready to call the current generation dumb, unmotivated, illiterate....
Well maybe the kids are intelligent.

But they sure act rude, loud, and crude, by anyone's standards. :doubt:

In the new editions of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," publishers will be removing the "N"-word from the book. NewSouth Books is the company that will be printing these new editions of the book. They are also taking out the word "Injun." These words are used to talk about an African-American or a Native American, respectively. This is to make the book so everyone can read it no matter what their age or maturity level happens to be at the time. This book has been banned in some areas, and this should help to lift the ban where it can be read again.

'Huckleberry Finn' to Be Printed Without the 'N' Word - Associated Content from Yahoo! - associatedcontent.com

For those of you under the age of 5.

How can you change a classic and not call it censorship?

Why are ****** and injun getting removed from a classic but in depth detail of sex scenes get a pass on a regular basis?

*sigh*

It's long past due for people to grow up.

Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Russell Baker wrote of the character "****** Jim," emphasis mine:

The people whom Huck and Jim encounter on the Mississippi are drunkards, murderers, bullies, swindlers, lynchers, thieves, liars, mows, frauds, child abusers, numbskulls, hypocrites, windbags and traders in human flesh. All are white. The one man of honor in this phantasmagoria is '****** Jim,' as Twain called him to emphasize the irony of a society in which the only true gentleman was held beneath contempt.

These people see the word "******" and shit a brick, without any understanding of what Twain was doing. They censor the work and, in effect, dilute if not not completely remove Twain's intended commentary. In doing so, the not only do a disservice to Twain and his work, but their children as well.

It makes me want to throttle someone...
Exactly. Poo stinks for a reason.

I hate this substitution too but...

where are all the free market bulwarks around here?

if they have the legal authority to do it...and people want to buy it...why are the free market people being silent?

two consenting adults want to make a contract to buy and sell a book without those words...who the fuck are you people to say they cant, huh?

But is it legal to change someone's written words and still have their name on it? To me that is being dishonest to the consumer. Change one word here and there and later a paragraph here and eventually the whole thing is changed and the original authors name is still on it and he wrote none of it.

The title needs to be changed to the "Politically Revised Edition of ...." and in bold letters at the top.

Two hundred years from now if only one copy survived and it was this edidtion ....

Well hell if they plan to change up historic historic writing to appease the masses might as well rewrite the Declaration of Independence;

He has excited domestic insurrection among us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes, and conditions.

Avalon Project - Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776

I'm sure our Native American friends aren't keen on being called merciless Indian savages...
The leftwing idiots would love to rewrite the declaration of independence to suit their socialist agenda.

It sounds like censorship to me, therefore, imo, it's a crime to sell the book.

So no free market issue

Are you saying it's a literal crime to sell the book? Of course it's not.

Your analysis of this issue is sorely lacking.

"In My Opinion"

You change a book w/o the authors say so, it's not his book anymore.
It is censorship, cut and dried censorship that's getting a pass in the name of political correctness.
And since the book has been changed it is no longer that book. The title and the authors name need to be changed.

Unless you want to look the other way in the name of pcdom, no reasonable person can accept this.

Is it only one publisher who's changing it?

oh and if they take ****** out of the book, it's no longer the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

In related news....

The publisher is also planning to release a revised version of Moby Dick. This time Ahab kills the whale and lives happily ever after. Much less traumatic for the children that way.

I don't agree with doing it ..and my children won't read that version of course.

I just think it's hilarious that the free market fools wont at least acknowledge that if someone wants to buy it and it's not criminal, they should be able to sell it.

MAYBE if it says "not authentic" on the front cover.

And I just think it's hilarious that you're still trying to peddle this strawman.

What are they going to call it?

Moby Member
Moby Johnson
Moby WeeWillie
Moby Peepee

I know you're kidding, but considering they are taking out ****** and injun....

It takes away the whole meaning of what Twain was making. You take out the word then it doesn't make since of how Huck Finn changed his mind about black people. It changed his thinking that black people are people just like white's.

Lots of paintings need to be edited

And rap songs.

You got that right. Nobody is editing ****** out of rap songs, or even complaining about it. Like this shit... NAS - N.I.G.G.E.R. (THE SLAVE & THE MASTER) LYRICS

There's one song from NAS that has ****** in it 42 times, but nobody says shit about that. This editing Huck Finn is just more politically correct BULL SHIT from your friendly, neighborhood, MUTTON HEADED LIBERALS. GOD DAMN these fucking people make me ill.
