Border Boletín: Marching toward immigration reform debate?
Immigration reform could be a major news story this month. Several news outlets are reporting that President Barack Obama is meeting with key senators in an effort to revive the immigration reform debate and immigrant advocacy groups are planning a large march in Washington D.C. on March 21.
Revamping U.S. immigration laws, of course, is a complicated and divisive issue that has proven to be too difficult for past legislative bodies. Even when it was clearly a priority issue in 2007, the debates generated plenty of buzz but fizzled out with nothing concrete accomplished.
In 2010, with health care reform still looming, many pundits find it hard to believe immigration reform will get the time and attention it needs in Congress. If you remember, Obama mentioned immigration just once in his State of the Union address, casting serious doubt on how a priority it is for the White House. If you dont remember, this all Obama said during the address on Jan. 27:
We should continue the work of fixing our broken immigration system - to secure our borders and enforce our laws, and ensure that everyone who plays by the rules can contribute to our economy and enrich our nation."
But, as I mentioned above, Obama appears to be making a serious push:
