Man is something to be overcome...

An exciting, new Oxford University study has found that faith and religion come to human beings naturally — possibly instinctively. The initiative, entitled the “Cognition, Religion and Theology Project,” took three years to complete and involved more than 40 different studies in 20 countries around the globe. According to CNN, the study has some intriguing findings:

...[F]aith appeals to the human heart and mind, but that humanity must evolve and move beyond simple myths.
The study seems to suggest that religiosity, like violence, lust, and the mating instinct, is yet another artifact of our past development. Fighting over religion then is, in a sense, shown to be even more analogous to fighting over skin colour than previously though

Absent of God man will put himself at the center of the universe, and we all know how that works out.
Yes, we decide that the bible is wrong and outlaw slavery, stop making girls marry their rapists, reject 'god's' [read: 'the priests''] orders that genocide be committed to conquer the 'promised land', stop killing people for being heretics and worshiping other gods, work to end sectarian violence, and actually progress as a species.

Religion rests upon the twin foundations of faith and dogma; [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Science-Liberty-Democracy-Reason-Nature/dp/0060781505"]both are antithetical to liberty and to progress[/ame].

What would you declare is wrong with the Bible?

Genocide for one thing.

Making girls serve their rapists sexually for the rest of their lives for another.

Killing unbelievers for another.

Killing homosexuals.

Or maybe you meant demonstrable wrong and not just evil?

Either Genesis 1 is wrong or Genesis 2 is. They can't both be correct.

Or God = Satan, since it claims each ordered the first census, despite elsewhere pretending they're different entities.

Is this it? You believe this validates that the Bible is wrong?

We are in a spiritual battle daily, try finding out what this means first....

That which is not internally consistent is demonstrated to be false. The two accounts of creation, like the two accounts of the census, are not compatible. Hence, at least one account must be false. Ergo, the particular collection containing them (there are different versions of the Christian bible, containing different texts) cannot be an infallible source and carries no more weight than any other historical document. Therefore, any claims made within the contained texts must be independently verifiable.

Faith = Hope, Drive, Perseverance, Risk and Love (as defined by putting the needs of others ahead of your own)

Religion = Politics and Organization.

Isn't it time we separated the two?

Do we?

:eusa_think: What WOULD happen if humans took responsibility for their feelings and actions instead of using the cop-outs of blaming The Devil or sweeping it under the rug as "Gods Will"?

Boy oh boy! Are you going to feel foolish when you cross over the river Styx and are impaled on the horn of the holy Unicorn and tormented by Leprechauns because you couldn't afford to pay Charon for your fare.

Faith = Hope

Depends on what you have faith in. If you have faith in a god who punishes rape victims by making them marry their rapists anmd serve them sexually for the rest of their lives, then there is no hope for justice in the world.
Faith=drive?

Is that why people like AQ never progress?

The rejection of faith and the drive to learn the truth are what drive progress.

, Perseverance,

Noone has ever persevered without faith in deity?

Rejecting dogma and faith is risk.
and Love (as defined by putting the needs of others ahead of your own)

Tell it to the Jesubite, Hittites, and Ammonites.
Religion = Politics and Organization.

Religion = power and control. To assume your position is to assume that non-religious persons ever develop ethical codes or systems of governance. There are anarcho-socialist communes that prove otherwise.

Then there's the moral instinct

Isn't it time we separated the two?
What two?

Keep It Simple, Stud.

You're ass-u-me-ing a deity. 'Faith' does not require a deity to be real faith. Re-read my original post with the understanding that faith does not require a deity.

Faith = Hope, Drive, Perseverance, Risk and Love (as defined by putting the needs of others ahead of your own)

Isn't it time we separated the two?

Religion and Faith. There's no reason religion should have a monopoly on faith.

Faith and religion are, for all intents and purposes, synonymous.

Religion is, for all practical purposes, any system founded upon faith and dogma. This includes everything from Catholicism to [ame="http://www.amazon.com/God-That-Failed-Arthur-Koestler/dp/0231123957"]Communism[/ame]

I find it more interesting to read the actual research for myself rather than having the media interpret it for me. That's just the way I roll.
