That's just silly. If it's your back that hurts why would you inject the semen into your arm? Wouldn't it make more sense to take the semen in your backside?

Clinical research is done all the time, where unproven treatments are tried to see if they work.

How do you think opium was discovered to be good at soothing pain? Someone tried it back in the day. Ditto with a lot of ideas.

This treatment apparently didn't work out well for the researcher, but that's just part of the research process.
