Emails reveal Justice Dept. regularly enlists Media Matters to spin press

September 18, 2012

By Matthew Boyle

Internal Department of Justice emails obtained by The Daily Caller show Attorney General Eric Holder’s communications staff has collaborated with the left-wing advocacy group Media Matters for America in an attempt to quell news stories about scandals plaguing Holder and America’s top law enforcement agency.

Dozens of pages of emails between DOJ Office of Public Affairs Director Tracy Schmaler and Media Matters staffers show Schmaler, Holder’s top press defender, working with Media Matters to attack reporters covering DOJ scandals. TheDC obtained the emails through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

Sadly, I’m not shocked in the least that the Obama/Holder Politicized DOJ would engage in practices using the George Soros funded and vehemently left wing Media Matters to attempt to shut down the 1st Amendment rights of reporters.

Emails sent in September and November 2010 show Schmaler working with Media Matters staffer Jeremy Holden on attacking news coverage of the New Black Panther Party voter intimidation scandal.

Holden attacked former DOJ Civil Rights Division attorneys J. Christian Adams and Hans von Spakovsky on Sept. 20, 2010 for what he called an attempt “to reignite the phony New Black Panther Party scandal.”

Before Holden posted his article at 7:52 p.m., Schmaler sent him several emails with information helping him attack both former DOJ officials.
This is the government under Barack Obama: politicized and on the attack, rather than doing their jobs, showing transparency, and acting within the law. The DOJ engaged in a relationship with Media Matters to destroy those who were doing their Constitutionally protected jobs to hold the government accountable.

Did any of you teatards actually read the emails?

There is nothing there.

The Fail is strong in you guys...

Where's the "scandal"?

Well, for starters, Media Matters is a 501 tax-free organization.

MMA was originally established as an Internal Revenue Service Section 501(c)(3) organization, that is, an organization that can receive tax-deductible contributions to engage in educational activities. The more precise purpose was to counter alleged media bias and so to “identify occurrences of excessive bias in the American media, educate the public as to their existence, and to work with members of the media to reduce them.”

What MMA actually is doing, however, moves far afield from identifying possible bias to mounting a campaign to undermine a major media outlet and to promote the Democratic Party and progressive causes associated with it. Mr. Brock himself has described this new strategy as “a war on Fox,” an effort “to disrupt [Rupert Murdoch's] commercial interests” and look for ways to turn regulators against News Corp.’s media outlets.

MMA’s activities should disallow its tax-exempt status in two fundamental ways. First, IRS rulings make clear that attacks on individuals, statement of positions that are unsupported by facts and use of inflammatory language and other distortions will cost an organization its tax-free status. Second, in declaring “guerrilla warfare” on Fox as the “leader” and “mouthpiece” of the Republican Party and in developing a sophisticated Democratic-leaning media training boot camp, MMA has transformed itself into an aggressive advocate for Democratic and progressive causes and thus produced a second deviation from exempt educational activities.

Media Matters Uses Tax-Free Funds to Attack Fox News - By Nat Brown - Media Blog - National Review Online

Media Matters cannot qualify as an IRS Section 501 organization if they are siding with one side over another. They are guilty of income tax fraud. They have been conducting a war on Fox News in collusion with the DoJ.

Yet another example of corruption........and you're still saying "Nothing To See Here".

The shit Obama is getting away with, with help from folks like you no less, is despicable.

There is no law that says 501c3s can't "take sides" on issues.

They are only prevented from endorsing a party or candidate.

Their emails would be proof enough in a court of law that they are endorsing Obama.

What they have been caught doing goes beyond endorsement but goes into advocacy.

Sorry for the English lesson, but Media Matters does both, thus they provided false information on their application for Section 501 status and have committed acts that should force the IRS to remove their status. It's just a matter of pressing charges after an audit.

Not only endorsing, actively working with. There are also questions if they didn't cross the line with fast & furious regarding obstruction.

I don't think you're understanding what I'm saying.

The ONLY thing that 501c3s are prevented from doing is explicitly endorsing a candidate for office or a political party.

They are not prevented from "advocating" anything. They can "advocate" for whatever they want, as long as it's not explicitly endorsing a candidate or party.

If you can find a link where Media Matters says that they endorse Obama, that would be breaking the law.

Otherwise, you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

In other words, Media Matters can do whatever they want to help Obama get re-elected, except actually endorsing him - and not violate the law.

There's no law that says that 501c3s have to be "impartial".

There's no law against a 501c3 working with the White House.

So you're saying that they have to say those exact words "We endorse Barrack H. Obama for President" for there to be any law breaking?

Is that what you're trying to say????

I think that the emails are proof enough that they are and the fact that they constantly produce stories in support of him and for him would be enough to prove they endorse him.

Personally I think you're just trying to act ignorant.

On a side note, his Health And Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, was caught saying "Vote for our candidates" so she, according to the law, should be history too, but of course this same DoJ won't press charges.

Looks like we're gonna have to re-write a lot of laws because of the corruption the current administration is exhibiting on just about a daily basis.
