A worldwide audience is listening to University of Southern Maine alumna Safiya Khalid’s story of perseverance.

On Nov. 5, the 2018 USM graduate earned election as the first Somali-American to serve on the city council of Lewiston, Maine. More astonishingly, she earned the seat despite a barrage of racist Internet attacks from around the country.

The fact that she ignored the trolls, and won 70 percent of the vote, has drawn journalists from as far away as Kenya to interview the 23-year-old woman.

“The story is everywhere,” Khalid said. “It’s pretty cool.”

Khalid must have campaigned well and voiced some good ideas.. The city's voters certainly seemed to like her.
It looks like Maine is improving. Remember that it had a classless ignorant slob of a white male as governor for eight years.

That's all behind us now and we fixed that problem--LePage never got a majority vote. Eliot Cutler, who was running as an Independent, took a good hunk of votes both times from the Democrat running against LePage, and LePage being the only Republican running in a very purple state, he won both times.
So we voted via referendum (because the Legislature sure wasn't going to bring it up) and insisted on Ranked Choice Voting so anytime there are three or more candidates, if none gets the majority, the second choice is taken into account.
Cutler voters would have put the Democrat 2nd, and LePage would not have embarrassed us and made life harder for the average Mainer for eight years.

Our new Governor, Janet Mills (D), is approving the legislation to use RCV for the Presidential election as well.

I'm neither Republican nor Democrat, so why do you think that matters to me?

We haven't had a census since 2010. In 2017, Trump's first mission was the Muslim travel ban.
