A worldwide audience is listening to University of Southern Maine alumna Safiya Khalid’s story of perseverance.

On Nov. 5, the 2018 USM graduate earned election as the first Somali-American to serve on the city council of Lewiston, Maine. More astonishingly, she earned the seat despite a barrage of racist Internet attacks from around the country.

The fact that she ignored the trolls, and won 70 percent of the vote, has drawn journalists from as far away as Kenya to interview the 23-year-old woman.

Trump won Maine's 2nd congressional district, which includes Lewiston in 2016. Now there is a Somali woman who just won 70% of the vote there. It's not looking so good for that orange turd this time, is it?

Lewiston, Maine was a rundown old mill town with basically no tax base when the Somali refugees were relocated there.

It wasn't long before the Somali people revitalized the town's economy by opening businesses in the downtown area.

Because the Somali's are into higher education for themselves and their children. An extension of the state college opened up in Lewiston.

Now the town has a future thanks to its Somali citizens. ...

I lived upper Maine 1999-2010 They kept moving in refugees, Lewiston, Bangor and more. People in Lewiston were devastated, it became very similar to Dearborn. They were not happy but still voted lib and supported black baby jesus . Remember except for 1 county (Piscatiquis) out of 16 they are all 95% liberal counties. I met some Somail refugees in Bangor when I would go there, the ones I met were nice and working jobs there.
