'Made in America'; What happened to American manufacturing?

Does anyone know of any good resources for looking into exactly what policies (many of our economic and labour regulations were in place for some time before the death of American manufacturing, it seems to me) led to the outsourcing of even the production of US flags and staplers and studies into the possible effects of regulations and policies (such as requiring imported goods to meet the same standards or enforcing tariffs as well as restructuring our tax system) designed to encourage businesses to once again produce in America?
