When I do traveling by car, I'll make a point to drive out of my way to find a local restaurant or deli (off the freeway) and eat there. While I prefer sub sandwiches (except for subway) I've had some exceptionally good luck finding places that may be a tad bit more expensive but the service and food makes up for it.
