Lower Cognitive Ability Proven to be Associated with Right-Wing Idealogies

Well, while I'm not defending any personal attacks, you did comment on the study. Your thread title claimed that the study proved an association. "proof" is not a claim made often in psychology; the authors claim they "found" a predictable pattern in their data set, which is a weaker claim.

I don't see any problems with the study, but I do think that it is in danger of being over-interpreted. The effects they are looking for are weak, subjective, and highly correlated with other variables. I wouldn't read too much into any one study.

Ahh, I see. Perhaps you are correct in that.

I actually may have lifted the OP title from a friend of mine on a social networking site (with permission of course). My bad for not editing it better.

The rest of the text was simply taken word for word from the study itself though.

Improving cognitive abilities with TMS...

Can magnets improve your brain?
29 March 2018 - We've all felt the desire to improve our cognitive abilities. A new tool, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, might provide that extra boost we've been looking for.
Our cognitive capacities influence just about everything we do. We've all heard about ways of improving performance: a good night's sleep, proper diet, exercise – you've heard it all before.

Neuroscientists might have found a more technologically inspired method of improving brain function. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) manipulates brain activity on the surface areas of the brain.

So far, neuroscientists have used TMS to improve memory, reaction times, and many other cognitive abilities. Despite these promising results, the long-term effects are ill-understood. Will this novel technology become as commonplace as smartphones, or has our obsession with technological improvements gone too far?

Life: Connected is a video series from BBC Future focusing on how digital culture and technologies pervade everything we do.

Lower Cognitive Ability Predicts Greater Prejudice Through Right-Wing Ideology and Low Intergroup Contact

Abstract

Despite their important implications for interpersonal behaviors and relations, cognitive abilities have been largely ignored as explanations of prejudice. We proposed and tested mediation models in which lower cognitive ability predicts greater prejudice, an effect mediated through the endorsement of right-wing ideologies (social conservatism, right-wing authoritarianism) and low levels of contact with out-groups. In an analysis of two large-scale, nationally representative United Kingdom data sets (N = 15,874), we found that lower general intelligence (g) in childhood predicts greater racism in adulthood, and this effect was largely mediated via conservative ideology. A secondary analysis of a U.S. data set confirmed a predictive effect of poor abstract-reasoning skills on antihomosexual prejudice, a relation partially mediated by both authoritarianism and low levels of intergroup contact. All analyses controlled for education and socioeconomic status. Our results suggest that cognitive abilities play a critical, albeit underappreciated, role in prejudice. Consequently, we recommend a heightened focus on cognitive ability in research on prejudice and a better integration of cognitive ability into prejudice models.

Gee a far left study, go figure that one!

Might as well go NYC to find out what it is like to live in Los Angeles.

Hm, I wonder how much cognitive ability it takes to call people stupid? Not much I'd wager.

Apparently, they become a racist, xenophobe with homophobia, who hides it to fit in with his left-wing ideologue friends.

Question though: Why is the "dimwit" in your example a black man?

Did anyone say the study was focused on white people?

Nawww. It's just crap science with a confirmation bias against a political ideaology. THe dead give give away is the quote about "right wing" AUTHORITARIAN beliefs. being a nurturing factor for things. ANY AUTHORITARIAN ideaology PREYS on the stupid. Left OR Right. THat's their recruitment demographic.

Study is nothing but political smoke for UK restrictions on speech and loss of freedoms that the Brits are experiencing.

Here is what those folks say about you (liberals)-

While liberals might like to think of themselves as more open-minded, they are no more tolerant of people unlike them than their conservative counterparts are.
Why Liberals Aren’t as Tolerant as They Think

Wrong. Scholars on both the left and right have studied this question extensively, and have reached a consensus that it is conservatives who possess the happiness edge. Many data sets show this. For example, the Pew Research Center in 2006 reported that conservative Republicans were 68 percent more likely than liberal Democrats to say they were “very happy” about their lives. This pattern has persisted for decades. The question isn’t whether this is true, but why.

Why Conservatives Are Happier Than Liberals

And to be sure- this field of study is dominated by liberals and biased against conservatives. Don’t believe me? Read this from the PSJ -
Is Social Psychology Biased Against Republicans?

Garbage double speak and reckless 'reasoning.' I'd say the site is suffering from the very ailment they claim others are suffering from but then, it is pretty typical of leftists to try to project their own mental illnesses on everyone else. It makes them feel like their radical views are somehow 'normal'...Go pedal that shit somewhere else like Daily Kos.
